There was a knock on the door as she finished her shower. She immediately gathered herself together as the pounding on the door got louder and louder.
“It’s me. Open the door!” Buddy yelled.
“Hold on!” She yelled. “I just got out of the shower.”
Quickly she wrapped herself tightly in a bath towel and opened the door with her hair soaking wet. There were still bubbles from the soap on her ear. Buddy rushed in.
Hi. She said
Hi. He returned. “I need you to quickly get ready, lets go for a walk”
Scarlet rolled her eyes but put on a sun dress irritated with Buddy’s mood swings. She had no clue what he wanted and was confused with why she was even there with him, considering how awkward he was to her. What was he holding back? she thought.
Scarlet and Buddy left her room quickly and took a walk into the city where they stopped and found a cute café. They sat down at a table outside and they sipped on cappuccinos. Scarlet got up use the restroom while Buddy watched her leave realizing how he missed looking at her. Her hair was still wet from her shower. When she returned, Buddy immediately started talking.
“Listen. I know this must’ve been weird for you, to fly out here on such a whim. I know we haven’t kept in contact but as soon as I proposed to Veronia I knew I had to have you here. After we get married, I am going to take her back to New York where I will announce it officially to my family. I just needed you here first.” He repeated. “You always knew how to calm me down.” He shyly chuckled. “I wanted to make sure I am doing the right thing.” He said. “I AM doing the right thing, right Scarlet?”
Her light brown eyes shifted from Buddy to the window seal. She then thought of the time when she was away for the summer in Oregon and was going to be alone for her birthday. He came to surprise her as a birthday present. When he knocked on her door and opened it, she screamed and told him she KNEW he was going to come and how happy she was that he was there! He replied and told her,
“It was the right thing to do.”
After a few moments of silence she replied, “This is your life Buddy. If you feel like its right, then it’s right.” She said forcefully. “You are getting married, and I’m happy for you if you’re happy.”
“I-I am happy.” He said quickly. His eyes were telling her something different.
“Then I am happy too.” She remarked. “Ok. Well, then I will see you at dinner.” Buddy stated.
As he left, Scarlet stood there brushing off the confused and lost expression on his face. She closed the door, took a deep breath and proceeded back to her hotel to get ready.
Buddy and Veronica were sitting at the long table when Scarlet walked in. Buddy’s eyes were fixed on Scarlet as she ended the room. No one caught his gaze but Scarlet herself. Their eyes met as she walked to her table and smiled at the lovely couple raising her glass to them both, putting aside her feelings and accepting the reality. She sat down and smiled and thought of the man she sat next to on the plane ride to New York.
“…He forgot his right to create his meaning, and not just search for it...” She said in her head.
Finally, Scarlet understood who he was really talking about.
As the food came out and the music was playing, everyone seemed to be graciously enjoying their time. She sat amidst Veronica's family talking to them in Spanish and drinking sparkling champagne with ease. After a few drinks, Scarlet got up to head to the bathroom. Just as she was leaving, Buddy got up to follow her.
Scarlet walked down the hallway and to the right where she found the ladies room. Buddy quickly followed in right after her. He locked the door behind him. When Scarlet was finished she got out of the stall and nearly collapsed with fear.
“BUDDY!!! What the hell are you doing here?!?” She said as she hit him on the arm.
He looked at her and she noticed his eyes were serious. It was then that he leaned into kiss her.
