“Looking for me?” came a voice from behind the door, **** it’s him. Crowley was armed with a gun aimed right at my head. Ugh, this bastard smelled horrible, his putrid stench filling my nostrils as I fought back the urge to puke; a sewer, a garbage dump, and a large pile of onions had nothing on this guy. His hair had enough grease to slip an elephant through the hole of a sewing needle, and his face was that of a sick and twisted man.
“Thought you could sneak up on Steve Crowley, did you? You thought wrong.”
“Well normally I’d be scared, but there’s one thing I know that makes it so you can’t kill me.”
He laughed and said “And what might that be? Can’t kill me, Steve Crowley is invincible.”
Oh GREAT, he speaks in third person; the guys a lunatic. Well, it’s now or never. I ducked and grabbed his arm with one hand as I jammed my elbow into his gut multiple times, the last one caused him to stumble backwards.
“Not bad, but not good enough.” Crowley said as he came at me slashing his arms in a mad craze. Each one was slow and easy to dodge. Then Crowley moved back a little and then… disappeared. ****! I forgot this guy put his all into sprint! I felt a sharp blow to my body as Crowley sped past me, he was literally bouncing off the walls, only appearing to land on one as he disappeared again to hit me. As soon as I recovered from the fifth blow I looked behind me to see him getting ready to come at me again, as soon as he disappeared I jumped to the side and brought my gun up to where he was going to land on the opposite wall and shot. I heard a howl of pain as the bullet pierced through Crowley’s flesh. Crowley got up holding his left shoulder.
“It doesn’t hurt! Steve Crowley is invincible! A man of steel!” like I said, l-u-n-a-t-i-c, lunatic; he thinks he’s Superman. Crowley sprinted out of the room as I heard the crash of a window. I ran out the door and got on my board to chase him, I saw him and his dull olive-green board in the distance flying away. I went at full speed and caught up to him. I got low on my board to get ready to maneuver as he fired his gun at me three times, I flew to the side and up in a horizontal spiral maneuver (flying to the side in a loop) to get out of the way. I fired my own gun at him and he dove downwards to get out of the way. We fired at each other back and forth, flying furiously out of the way of each other’s bullets, pausing only to reload in the air. He fired at me and I flew to the side, I flew downwards, I flew in a spiral, I flew to the side, and I flew at him. We did all this high in the air where no one would see us, and Crowley fired his gun a lot; he was bound to run out of ammo soon. And that he did, as he landed on top of a sky scraper and waited for me. I landed and he was panting hard, he used up a lot of energy flying; he wasn’t very good with his board and obviously used sprint to move around more, and the worse you are with an ability, the more and more of the diver’s energy is sucked up maintaining it. It was a good thing that Crest and Lynx stressed practicing and getting used to my board so much or else I would have ended up like him.
Crowley kept panting as he yelled out “You can’t kill Steve Crowley! It isn’t possible to hit a speeding bullet ha ha! The man of steel! I’m the man of steel!” with that he sprinted at me, and this time I could see him, the lack of energy made him slower. I stepped to the side and grabbed him by the shirt slamming him down.
“So you’re the man of steel huh?” I said as I aimed my gun at him “Well Superman, I’ve got your kryptonite right in the chamber of this gun.” Bang, the sound cracked the air itself as the high-speed projectile pierced through Crowley’s skull. The blood from his head flew up from the impact and his body went limp, the madness in his face subsided as he ceased to be. Crowley was just a corpse now, his blood flowing out from his head and creating a large pool of the stuff. I backed up and just sat down, staring at the body of the first man I ever killed as the guilt shook my body and ravaged my soul. I couldn’t keep it together, I did something I couldn’t take back. The fact that he too was a killer, and an absolute madman to boot, barely even helped dull this sharp blade we call guilt, the blade that struck through me the moment I saw the life fade from the eyes of a madman. I sat there for hours, just looking at what I had done, and finally picked up his body and dove off of the building the form of a board formed below my feet as I flew towards the base of an organization whose name I did not know, the organization that was the reason that I have done what I have done. I reached the building and put in the code to open the door to the elevator shaft, and when that door opened, I was met with smoke.
I jumped down the shaft and dropped Crowley’s body, there was fire here and there as I ran through the hallways, the fires had obviously just been started. I got to the residential quarters and couldn’t believe what my eyes beheld. The walls were painted red with bloodstains and the hall was lined with bodies of divers from the organization, men and women who I got to know in these long months.
“Wesley!...” came a weakened voiced of a man who sat against a wall, holding his side where blood continually flowed from, his hand soaked in blood; his name was Caps. I ran to where he was and kneeled down next to him.
“Caps, what happened here!?”
“They… found us… the enemy…” Caps paused to cough into his other hand and looked down at it to find that it now had spots of blood on it as his precious red liquid of life dripped down from his lips; his cough persisted throughout the time he spoke. “We… got betrayed… they just jumped in here and… started firing. We barely had… time to react and no weapons but…we got a few of them…. not bad, yeah?”
“Not bad at all, Caps. Damn good if I say so myself.” I could feel a tear well up in my eye.
“Hey, kid… they got here just a while ago… there might still be some… go help… Hex.”
“I will, don’t die on me Caps.”
“Ha ha… no can do, my fine friend… but when you see these bastards… give ‘em hell, yeah?”
“I won’t just give them hell, I’ll send them to it; I’ll be sure to make them send you a postcard from there.”
Caps laughed and said “Make damn sure, Wes… well looks like… I gotta go… other end is getting rather… testy. Doesn’t like to… wait, yeah?”
“Caps!” and so his eyes faded and his smile never left as he fell into an eternal slumber. I put my hand over his eyes to close them and looked at his face, smiling as if he was enjoying some pleasant dream. I ran down as fast as I could and found one of them and raised my gun as I yelled out “Bastard!” I knew everyone in this base and I knew who was and was not with us. There was only four or five of them as I ran to Hex’s office in the halls decorated with blood and corpses and fire and death. I reached the door to Hex’s office and, nothing. I ran all around the base going from door to door looking for him, and on the way I found the body of Doc just lying there. I put my hands over his corpse’s open eyes to close them as I repressed tears from coming out of my eyes and left him to rest in peace. I finally found Hex in the training area, on the floor with a wound in him and a man standing over him aiming his gun at Hex’s head. I was about to shoot the man but a gray wave shot up and swept the man’s head right off his shoulders. I ran as fast as I could to Hex, even going as far as using sprint to get there as quickly as possible.
“Hex!”
“Hey, Wes. You kill Crowley?”
“Yeah, what happened?”
“Caught us by surprise.” Hex said as he pointed in the distance to where I saw the bodies of Arc and Crest. “Can you reach in my pocket and get me a smoke and light it?” I did as he asked as he took a puff. “Ha ha, looks like they were wrong, smoking isn’t what’s gonna kill me.” Tears began welling up in my eyes “Wesley, it was Lynx.”
“Lynx!?”
“Turns out she was with the enemy, came in here herself to kill Arc and Crest, we got a wound on her but that’s it, she took us by surprise and Arc didn’t notice her since we thought she was a friendly, and the others weren’t divers so he couldn’t detect them. She didn’t even has the decency to finish me off herself.” he paused to laugh ”I knew something like this might happen while you were here, so I took the liberty of leaving a letter in my desk for you. It explains everything, go.”
“What about you?”
“I’m finished, there’s a bright side to this for me though.”
“What?”
“Everyone who said that smoking would be the death of me was wrong.” Hex laughed as his remark caused me to give a slight one myself as a tear rolled its path down my cheek. I left the room and looked back at Hex as his consciousness passed. I turned and walked away, and wiped my eyes, I don’t need anymore tears. I walked to Hex’s office and tried the top drawer, no letter, the second, nope, I then tried the third down and it wouldn’t budge; it had a lock.
“****!” the other side didn’t have the letter in it, which means it was in the other drawer. I looked on top of Hex’s desk and saw a note that read “Bang bang.”, childish but useful. I took out my handgun and shot the lock twice and tried the door again, it worked. The drawer contained three things: a letter, a key, and a piece of paper with some information written on it. The letter read:
Dear Wesley,
If your are reading this then that means my suspicions have come true. Something
strange has been going on, contact with other bases has disappeared one by one.
As far as I know, this base will be the last to go. In case that these events take place
and I lose my life, I have written this letter. You may have noticed that two objects
came along with this letter: a note and a key. The note has an address written on it.
That address is an apartment that will have everything you need. You have two choices
as of now: you can lead a normal life or you can continue our work against the
enemy organization, they are called Spawn. If you choose to fight against them,
there is a cache of weapons in the apartment, the note will show you where it is
in the apartment and how to access it. There is also all the information we have
of enemy agents and those who fund Spawn. Your job, if you so choose to do ,it will
be to assassinate these individuals. The note also contains information on a bank
account, this account has all of the money that our branch of our organization has
obtained. I warn you: you cannot, under any circumstances, go back to your old life.
As a member of our organization, we have faked the death of ”Wesley Smith”, we
did so the night you came to us. The apartment has a fake identification that is the name
the apartment is rented out to: Toby Stalwart. If you choose to be a normal citizen, this
will be your name from now on and will be your cover name from now on if you choose to
continue our work. The rest is up to you, my friend. If you will oblige my plea then I welcome
you to Broken Infinity, Saint.
So the alias he chose for me was Saint, huh? I put the key in my pocket and looked down at the note, just as Hex said there was the address of the apartment and information on what is in it and how to get to the weapon cache, as well as information on a bank account. I walked out of Hex’s office and walked through the fire and blood clad hallway decorated with corpses all the way to the elevator shaft and went up to the roof. I looked at the address on the paper and dove off of the roof of the building and flew to the address on the paper.
When I got there, I ran up to the stairs to the room and took the key out of my pocket and put it into the door, turned it and heard a click. My heart beat a little as I opened the door to the room. It was a gigantic and expensive looking apartment, on one of the walls was the Broken Infinite logo, the one on Hex’s desk. There were many bookshelves and from the note I knew this was information on the dealings of Broken Infinite, what I should do, and information on Spawn. I went over to what would be my room and it was just as expensive looking as the rest of the apartment, the bed looked as soft as a cloud and the closet was filled with new clothes. I went back and looked at the living room, where there was a grandfather clock. I opened it up and did as the note told me, pressed down on the face of the clock and sure enough, a door opened to a room filled with weapons, ammo, and the like. I went over to the kitchen and sat down. Everything was too much and the sadness from the days events would not leave me for a long time, and it will always be there like a scar on my mind. But I knew what I must do, I need to finish the work that they started, I need their deaths to not be in vain. A glimmer caught my eye and I saw a watch, the back of it had the Broken Infinite logo, I picked it up, and put it on my wrist as it made the hands moved with the flow of time.
Tick-tock, tick- tock, the gears of fate are spinning forward faster and faster as it causes the second hand to spin rapidly, now the minute hand, now the hour hand as time ran haywire on its course for three years after these events.
Found a new watch.
