Jessica Wilson had a crush on Craig Sawyer. It was a life long, one sided love affair that started in grade school, swept through high school and continued years after Craig married his college sweetheart.
The problems were many, but the top two were the facts that Craig knew nothing of her infatuation with him and, Jessica was his wife Sandy's best friend. The best friend relationship was not circumstantial; Jessica had worked hard over the years to become Sandy's closest confidant. She figured that if she couldn't actually have Craig the next best thing was to remain close to him. What better way to enhance the closeness than being Sandy's buddy.
To say that Jessica was a very talented actress was an understatement. In retrospect, Jessica felt she'd done a fabulous job of keeping her feelings for Craig tightly locked away. She was confident that she had never slipped, never revealed even the slightest hint that Craig was anything more than her best friend's husband. She also realized that time was slowly taking its toll. As the days, months and years passed, it became harder and harder for her contain her emotions. Emotions that never abated; rather, they grew stronger as time passed.
Sandy and Jessica did everything together. They went shopping every Tuesday. The belonged to the same health club and worked out together twice a week. Jessica, unmarried and childless, baby sat Sandy's two children whenever the need arose. The boys, William - eight and Justin - ten, called her Aunt Jessie and loved her to death.
Jessica stood at the kitchen island counter, waiting for Sandy to finish packing her rucksack with water bottles and fruit.
"I just read the most fantastic book. It's called "The Secret" and it's...."
Sandy waved her hand in dismissal, "Oh, I've heard all about that book. There's a movie, too, I think. Anyway, as far as I can tell it's all a bunch of crap!"
"Do you think so? Have you read it or seen the movie?" Jessica took no offense at being cut off. She knew Sandy all too well and long ago become accustomed to her sometimes stubborn and single minded dismissal about things she didn't understand or subjects she considered "crap".
"No, and I won't do either. You know me, Jess...I've never fallen for stupid stuff like that. I'm a realist and, well, truthfully...it sounds anti-religious to me."
"Well, I found the book to be quite thought provoking. I mean what if such a thing were true?" Jessica wanted to continue the discussion but, Sandy had already slung her backpack over her shoulder and turned for the door.
Jessica issued an under the breath, "harrumph" and followed Sandy to the door, deciding to drop the subject.
It started raining in buckets as the two drove to the gym where they had yoga classes every Thursday morning. "Dammit," exclaimed Sandy "you might know it would start raining and we never get a damned parking space close to the gym."
Jessica said, "Yeah, we're going to get drenched if this doesn't let up." Inside, though, she was thinking, we will get a parking place, right next to the door over and over again. She focused her mind on that particular parking spot and she allowed no doubts whatsoever to enter her mind. We will get a parking place right next to the door...we will....
Jessica had her eyes closed, deep in concentration, as Sandy pulled into the lot. She saw the open slot in her mind and as Sandy yelled, "Whooeee, look at that, right next to the door!"; Jessica smiled. It works! It really works!
