Chapter 6:
The smell of blood was strong mixed in with the dust and stale air. The colors were vivid. She always knew when the dream was under her control.
She tried to make out the figures on the other crosses. She didn't know the woman that hung besides Father Preston. In the dim light all she could see was that she wore a nurse's uniform.
There was a lanky man on the other cross his face cast in shadows, beside him hung a slight figure that she first thought was a woman.
Moving closer, she peered through the dust and darkness, noted the flat chest. It was a young boy, the longish hair had threw her off.
Penned to the boy was a note that read;’ Though Shall Not Steal'.
She moved around the large room, thankful to be away from the blood and gore.
The room was large stacked to the top with crates and cardboard boxes.
She struggled to get one of the boxes open. The box was full of ipods.
She knew the dream would move the was she wanted it to movie by the way she’d willed herself to look inside the box. There was a window near the top of the building. She looked around thinking if she could stack boxes high enough, she might be able to look out and figure out where she was.
Suddenly she heard a loud banging. She felt herself being pulled out of her dream state. She tried to resist, but the banging was bringing her out.
"Adara, are you all right." It was Franco's worried voice that brought her fully awake.
"I'm okay." She snapped, and was medially sorry.
As she fallowed Franco down stairs he said, "I just wanted to tell you the police were leaving."
Office Bohac stood at the door his hat in his hand. "Ms. Davis, I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything."
She wanted to tell him about the warehouse but she didn't know how to convince him she was dreaming of a real place. More than likely he’d think she was crazy or had something to do with the murders. Franco was already looking at her like he was afraid she'd crack up any minute.
"Do you thing Paige, might of took off on her own, somewhere?"
Dara walked to the kitchen and poured herself a cup of coffee. "She wasn't at any of her friends houses. I don't have a clue where else she could be."
Just then the phone rang. They looked at one another, both afraid to pick it up.
Finally Adara grabbed the phone off the hook. A voice said, "Your daughters safe, Dara, but the sins of the mother shall be visited on the daughter." The phone went dead.
She frowned, "Something’s changed." She’d heard music in the background. The music made her brain itch. She remembered it from somewhere. If only she could pull her self together and just remember where she’d heard it.
While she waited she explained things to Franco.
“Things seem so mixed up, but I know that everything fits together somehow and I know that the memory is lock away in my school days at St. Stephens.”
Franco listened, then ask, “Would it help for you to visit St Stephens?”
She stood up and begin to comb my hair. “Want me to come with you?” he ask.
That why, several minutes later they were pulling into the parking lot in front of the ancient building that housed the budding nuns and the St Stephens school children.
The halls were tall and long as they made their way through the building their feet echoing so it sound like they were the only ones in the building.
“My room was down this way.“ Adara whispered.
They made our way towards a green door. When she opened it there was stairs leading down into darkness.
Frowning she said, “This isn’t right, I must have took a wrong turn somewhere.” Then she noticed the faded red paint peeking through the green.
“This is the room but theses stairs wasn’t here before.”
She tried the light switch but nothing happened. Franco said he’d run back out and get a flashlight.
As she waited she heard movement and a whispery call. Some one was calling her name, no someone was calling Mommy.
“Paige, is that you?” she called softly. She thought she heard her daughters voice again.
She started down the steps, “Paige!” she called louder. Just then the door slammed shut throwing her into total darkness.
Holding onto the wall she continued down the stairs. Chills slide down her spine as the wild laughter came from the dark.
A part of her wanted to turn and run but the mother in her couldn’t go until she knew for sure her daughter was down there in the dark.
A voice so full of whispering echoes came up from the dark. “You could have helped me Dara.”
“Who are you?” she screamed.
You could have saved me. I knew what you are. You could have save us both.”
Just then the door opened at the top of the stairs. Franco yelled down , “Adara, are you down there.?”
As the flashlight washed the stairs with light, she could hear the clatter of feet as some ran away.
They went down and searched what turned out to be the girls locker room. They did not find Paige or the owner of the voice.
As they made their way back to the car, Adara kept thinking that even with the echoes the voice was familiar.
