The Day of the Attack  by toluco_elsiete

On April 14 Travis went to class like any other day. He had an early class. The class was printing design for students who wanted to become "printers".  The teacher was a fellow named Mr. Stiles. Everyone made fun of Mr. Stiles behind his back. He was an older quirky eccentric man. He was just looking forward towards retirement and could be cranky.  He did not like most of the students. Travis felt that Mr. Stiles did not like him either.

The class was full that morning since they were getting ready for the approaching finals and the semester ending. Everyone was dead tired drinking energy drinks and double espressos.

Twenty minutes into the class, a former grad student of this college arrived at campus fully armed with weapons.

The disgruntled former grad-student walked into a classroom down the hall from Mr. Stiles' class. He walked in and randomly shot several students point-blank. The sound of the guns made everyone jump in Mr. Stiles' class and two students peered out into the hallway. They ran back into the class in horror. They screamed in panic that a man fully armed was walking in their direction down the hallway.

Mr. Stiles in a very irritated mood thought it was a joke and walked out of the classroom to the hall.  Travis out of instinct, felt protective towards his teacher and followed him closely behind to the hallway. Travis also felt an instinct of not leaving the classroom, so he slightly peered out of the door. The killer shot Mr. Stiles in the head.

The moment of violence was instant like a car accident but much more evil. It was instant but it seemed suspended in eternity. In slow-motion. Adrenaline invaded Travis and he yelled at the other students to take cover. He also pushed two students to help him block the door with a large desk.

The killer tried pushing the door but couldn't get in. He then pushed harder on the door and his eyes looked inside the classroom meeting the eyes of Travis holding the desk by the side.

The moment only lasted less than four seconds but this moment would become a building block that would be ingrained with trauma into the mind of Travis. This very brief moment would haunt Travis for long periods of time.

Yet, Travis and the other students held on to the desk and blocked the killer from coming in even after he shot at the door several times. The killer then gave up and went looking for more students to kill.

There was a long silence and you could only hear the quiet cries of kids underneath their desks and hiding. The next sound was of police and SWAT teams invading the building and some other shots.

In the end the killer whose name was Franco Katzowitz shot himself the minute he heard the law arrive.

There were few details about the killer. He was a former grad student who was currently attending another university to get his master's degree. His mother had passed away two years before the shooting. His girlfriend had told the media that he was on several medications for insomnia and depression. He had recently stopped taking his medications.

In the meantime Travis Karbowksi was interviewed by several reporters and named a heroe for saving the lives of twenty students even though he was not able to save the life of Professor Stiles.
