The story so far:
Grabbing my pen and mask, I hit the speed and charged over to Ruby and Roberts place to talk with Ruby about this. Getting there I went inside and called out to Ruby. After a minute I heard her call back “What do you want? Its still early...” She growled.
“Well unless you want to go to jail I think it's a fine time to get up!” I called through her door after walking down to it.
“Jail? What are you talking about?”she grumbled through the door.
“This mornings paper! It has a picture of you robbing a bank!”
“Wha...? oh shut up! It's too early for the jokes... go home Dilton!”
“This isn't a joke!” I spat “Get out here now or I'm coming in!” She didn't answer back and I didn't hear any movement so I mumbled “Fine, be like that!” Opening the door I found her curled up in a ball with her blanket just barely around her.
“Ruby, you know I would never bother you in the morning unless it's an emergency! Now get up!” I demanded as I started to shake her.
“I told you to go-a-way!” She yelled as she opened her eyes to look. She immediately started to blush, then shrieked “Get the hell out of my room!” of course I did get out, and I ran for my life at that, but I made sure to leave the newspaper with her. A couple seconds later there was another loud “What?! This can't be real!”
“Tell me something I don't know!” I shouted back through the door.
After she got dressed and we sat down beside each other in the kitchen she asked “What are we going to do about this?”
“Let's start with the obvious, figure out who this other you was. Can you think of anything?”
“Well... a doppelganger is possible...”
“Wouldn't they would have some differences? I highly doubt they are going to look identical to you Besides that, I'm sure they wouldn't be able to do any of this!...”
After a pause Ruby said “You think one of the other mage descendants is doing this?”
“How else would you explain the fire throwing, flying, and perfect look a-like? Who out there do we know can do extraordinary stuff like this...?”
Grudgingly she said “Other mages...” She obviously had a lot of faith that the other mages were good people.
“Right! Now do you actually know any of them or where they might be?”
“No, it's not like we all exchange emails and chat. I never met any of them before! I know they're out there but I don't know them. We're all spread out through out he world and are bloodlines have never contacted one another before.”
“Would you be able to tell them apart from everyone else if you saw them?”
“Well... according to my books, I should be able to feel there presence if they are anywhere around within half a mile...”
“That's great! That gives us something to work with!”
“But if that's true, I would have noticed them go by before... it isn't like they can know my exact location and work to avoid me.”
“Maybe they do know where you are. In the beginning, you always knew where I was and what I was doing. What if their doing the same?”
“I was just invisible. That doesn't hide one's presence.”
“Could they be using someone or something to spy on you?”
That seemed to peek some concern in her. “It's possible whoever it is, is communicating with the bugs and or animals and telling them to keep watch on me and tell them where I am at that moment.”
“That could do it... but if that's the case then we definitely can't get the jump on them. They'll know about me for one thing...”
“What is there we can do about this then?!”
“Nothing.” came a cheeky voice that sounded of madness and ice.
A man looking to be just barely into his twenty's stepped out from around a corner with a foolish grin smeared across his face. His hair was long, thin, straight, and pitch black, his eyes were like coal, and, in general, he was very thin in the face as well as the body.
“On the other hand, finding me isn't really the problem. What the problem really is, is I just can't decided on who to kill first. Maybe you can help me with that. I'll do some monologuing well I wait for you to come up with a decision.
“Unlike what you think, I'm not a mage. I was entrusted with a power, like you were Dilly! Once the mage entrusted me with it, I stole all his true powers for my own by slaying him.” the man gave a twisted grin. “I did it because I just wasn't satisfied with the artificial magic I had been given and even more unhappy with the fact that I was only given the ability to control metals. Once I killed him all his power and knowledge became mine. I truly was happy for a moment, then it came to my attention that there were more mages and if I took their power and knowledge I could become even stronger, I could become undefeatable, I could become like a god to rule this world! Since then I've been travelling the world, hunting you mages. Now finally, you are the last one!” He coldly said to Ruby.
“I have a question.” I spoke up out of the blue.
“Really...? and what would that be?”
“Why frame Ruby for the bank robbery, killing five people, and burning the money?”
“So that if she manages to run away, everyone will be out to get her... and I was bored.” He grinned his twisted grin again. “Now, who should die first? Have you decided?”
Focusing, I put my hands together over the table and said “Please spare us, you must already be more powerful the we could ever imagine, we pose no threat to you!”
The man started to laugh then said “ even small amounts of power can pose great threats... like you, Mr. Hero.”
“Fine, if that's how you want it....” I said taking my hands apart and placing them palm down on the table. The energy I created to transmute passed through out the room except behind Ruby and I, then Spikes grew out of everything and flew toward the man in an attempt to stop him, none hit the mark. The man had suddenly vanished and before I realized what had happened, six metal blades were sticking out of Ruby. For a moment we both watched each other with wide eyes as tears started to fill them. Ruby slowly put a hand on my cheek, I put my hand over it.
The man's voice came from behind and said “Well that decides who dies first! Now Dilton get to watch as Ruby goes cold!” the pleasure in his voice was sickening.
A second after, Ruby finally passed on. The realization made me choke and cry harder. I shouted “No!” over and over in my sadness and rage right up until I heard the mans sick, cold, and crude laughter. Once I heard it, I turned my head quickly and used Superman's heat vision and roasted the area. Next I turned on the x-ray vision and started looking for the guy. As I looked around I wrote Hulk on my chest. I found him in the next room preparing something, not that I cared what. With my rage as the fuel I focused and became the Hulk. Smashing the floor with my fists once, I charged through the wall separating the kitchen from the living room. The man looked shock as he saw me appear. Reaching for him, I grabbed him by the legs and tossed him around the room before he used his power to slip out of my grip. Once he did, he attacked me with some sort of energy blast strong enough to lift me off my feet, blast me out of the building, and send me flying four city blocks. I found myself smashed into another house. Shouting angrily, I got up and jumped back toward Ruby's place. I smashed my way back in and started looking around for the guy again. After a moment he stepped out on his own with a grin back on his face .
“You are just too tough like this, muscles! I'm gonna need you to die before things go too far!” I yelled once more at him and as I did he threw something into my mouth. Gas started to pour out of the object and I began to feel dizzy. The man grinned once more time then quickly left.
Everything went dark after another minute and I felt myself crash down onto the floor and lose my concentration.
I can't believe it ends like this... I don't want to die yet...! I want to watch that man suffer and die a horrible death, I want to see him cry for mercy and beg forgiveness for taking what I loved most away from me before I could even tell her how I felt, then I want to crush his skull in! I continued to think like this well I flouted through the never ending darkness.
Before I got too far from the light, my will to live so that I might see that mans death turned me back around and propelled back to the light. When I opened my eyes again I started coughing and gasping for air uncontrollably for some minutes. As I did, I realized that Robert was now here and kneeling beside me.
“Thank god you're still alive!” he shouted as he looked at me in compete joy and relief and gave me a hug. “What happen?”
“We were attacked by someone who was killing off all the mage descendants and taking their power...”
Robert made a very scared face then said “W-what about Ruby... she's okay... right...?” I remained silent. “Tell me she's okay!” He cried out.
This time I put my arms around him and said “I'm sorry Robert... It happened so fast...” Robert started to cry out like I did. After I got him to relax a little, I felt something was off. There was no noise being made other then what Robert and I were making. Stepping outside, it was obvious. The giveaway was a pidgin flouting in the air. It hung in the sky as if on strings but didn't move a muscle. I realized time had stopped. I guess that explains the lack of cops, ambulances and, firetrucks that normally would have come running with all the noise and damage done here. I thought to myself, I wonder why Robert and I aren't frozen in time as well... I brushed the thought off for the moment since I had bigger things to think about.
Turning around I went to Rubys body. Removed the long blades, then laid her down on a couch in the living room where I had smashed in two of the walls. Robert ran over to her side and cried some more.
Moving to the bathroom I wrote “Eragon” -the main character from the Inheritance cycle- on my forehead. Concentrating, I stretched out my mind in search of the cold, madman who killed Ruby and attempted on me. It took me some time to find him, but I discovered he was twenty-three blocks away and was now moving back our way. Why would he be coming back though? Did he realize I'm still alive? I decided pondering this won't help so I crept into his mind until I found my answer. He was after Robert now!
“Robert! We have more trouble!”
“The man who did this, he's coming back for you!”
“How could you know that?!”
“I was searching for him with my mind so I could go after him. Listen Robert, stay here. I'm going to go fight him again.
“Stay here...!” Stepping closer I pulled out my mask and said “Hold onto this. I'll be back for it, got it?”
He nodded slowly looking like he was going to cry with renewed strength.
Turning away I hit the super-speed. At the same time I reached out to that mans mind again and, through the connection, I said “Looks like you aren't to good at finishing the job”
“Wha! You lived! And telepathy? Nice trick. Just wait where you are I'll finish my job properly this time!”
“No. This time we fight somewhere else, away from Rubys body and Robert. It shouldn't matter to you anyway if you win, right?”
The man was silent for a moment, then said “Fine, the roof of the tallest building in the city then. What better place for a hero to die then high in the sky looking over the city he calls his own. You know... I think I'm going to burn this place down after I finish you and Robert off!”
“I won't let you.” with that I severed the connection.
About five minutes later, I met up with that man atop the roof of the chosen building in the city.
“For someone so fast, you sure took your time getting here.”
“Tell me your name so I at least know what to call you when a carve your tombstone.”
The man laughed “I'm honoured that you would do such a thing for me, but you needn't worry about it.”
“Humour me then.”
After a pause, he said “Fredrick, Fredrick Saxon.”
“Well then, Fredrick it is. I just have to ask...”
“You froze time right? Why can Robert and I still move?”
“You two are connected to the magic. You have the false power and the boy has the same blood as his sister. Now. Let's get this party started!”
The two of us started to circle around one another. Making one full circle, Fredrick quickly shot his energy blast-like attack at me.
I jumped backwards to dodge. Well still in midair, I focused and clapped my hands together, then when I landed back down I touched the concrete building.
Out of the concrete, I made a giant hand pull out of the roof just behind Fredrick in an attempt to get a hold of him and crush the life out of him. The attack failed as he dodged to the right. Once he was clear of the hand he charged at me with three long, metal claws coming out of each hand and a disgustingly evil grin on his face.
Surprised by the sudden head-on attack, I put some focus on Kitty -one of many other names and symbols I added to my body well I took my time getting to the fight- from X-men.
Fredrick fell through me as he swung Wolverines claws. As he passed through, the claws caught in the roof. Quick as I could, I turned on the alchemy and touched the ground again. The roof started to reach up and began grabbing onto his claws and legs then continue to climb the rest of him.
Fredrick looked panicked for a split second, but then he started chanting something that sounded similar to the gibberish that granted me my power. Just as he finished the chant, he looked to me with another sickening grin. With the last word of the chant a ball of light formed around him then slowly began to crack. A moment later the ball shattered and faded away as it fell, well Fredrick stood up straight and said “Nice try, but you'll have to do better then that.”
“That so? Then I'll step it up for you!”
With my alchemy, I touched the nearest source of metal and shaped it into a sword longer then I, and as wide as I, with one hole large enough you could put your head threw near the tip of the blade and an open semi-circle on the edge, near the hilt. The handle was two and a half hands long.
“This here is the weapon of a character from a graphic novel called Naruto. The name of the weapon translates to “Decapitating Carving Knife”. The character was a deadly ninja and a freelancing assassin who went by the name of Zabuza. I'm going to show you some of his moves... so try not to die!” I grinned.
I let go of the focus on everything else and turned it all to Zabuza. Hitting the juice, I charged at Fredrick with Zabuzas amazing speed and attacked. Not having the time to dodge, Fredrick blocked with his claws. The bock only prevented him from getting cut though. I knocked him back six feet.
Fredrick looked as though he was utterly appalled by my speed and strength, so much that it made him freeze up for a moment, but then he pulled a sword from the materials around.
I grinned in response, then blasted of toward him again and started an exchange of blows. In general, I was the one doing the attacking well he defended as he tried to keep his ground against the weight of my blade. At one point I got close to loping off his left arm, but instead Fredrick managed a block. I still gave him a good cut across his upper arm, and I jarred his sword arm pretty good.
Well he recovered, I quickly went in for a fatal blow to the heart, but missed as he suddenly vanished.
With out warning, I felt a sharp, cold pain hit my lower right back and come out the front of me. I went rigid with shock.
Turning my head to look behind me, I saw Fredrick grinning a toothy grin. I groaned for a moment then looked to the sky as I felt a raindrop hit my hair. It was starting to rain!
Looking back too Fredrick I said “Don't count me out of this fight yet!” as I pulled myself free from his thin blade.
The rain picked up, and as it did I gave myself some distance from my enemy
“Did you know that ninjas have their own special abilities such as genjutsu and ninjutsu...? Well let me show you a fun ninjutsu. It's called 'Hidden in the mist!”
With that, I made a stance, then created a thick mist from the fresh rain and disappeared in it. It was impossible to see even an inch in front of you, the mist was so thick. Well the the mist set in I focused on Percy Jacksons name and used the water in the air to heal my wound, then I went in for my next attack using only my hearing to find Fredrick.
Before I could though, he used an ability to blow the mist away. I cursed as Fredrick got his sights set back on me and made another slash at my torso. He hit full on, the blade passed right through, but then... my water style clone changed back, well I jumped out from behind and gave him a deep slash across his back!
Fredrick screamed out in pain, dropped his sword, and fell to his knees. “Please don't kill me!” Fredrick suddenly pleaded looking tired, and scared.
Stepping around to the front of him, I started to say “Give me one good reason why I-!”
“Dilton!” Came Roberts voice.
Surprised, we both looked around for him until we saw him by the door to the roof.
“Robert! What are you doing here?! Better yet, how did you get here?”
“A taxi... time started flowing again.... Listen, don't do this! Ruby wouldn't want you to kill someone! No matter how bad!” What Robert said made me stop and realize how true that was... she would hate me if I ever killed someone...
In the mean time Fredrick managed to muster up enough strength to heal his wound. Once he did he jumped up, grabbed me, and forced to the ledge of the roof and tried to shove me off. It failed but I did stumble at the edge and flail my arms. When I did, I accidentally hooked Fredrick in the hole of my blade and beheaded him.
Robert and I stood wide-eyed as we watched his head fall over the side and plummet the the street well blood poured out from his body and splattered over the edge of the roof.
“Robert... hold onto that mask for me a little longer.” I said as I forced my sword into the roof, not taking my eyes of Fredricks body.
“W-why? What is it?”
“I don't diverse to be called a hero, heroes don't fight for revenge, they fight to protect... and they should never kill, even if the person killed was a killer.... I wanted his blood so badly....” I said as I stepped up onto the ledge and looked to Robert.
“Dilton.... It was an accident, you can't blame yourself...! Come down!”
“I can't do that. For now, I'm unfit to keep this up. I need to leave this world. Just remember, never lose my mask, alright? I'll prove to Rubys memory that I can make up for what I've done. Take care Robert.” I finished as I let myself tilt backwards. It was time for those flying lessons I thought about so many months ago.
“Dilton!” Robert yelled as he ran over too me to try and stop me. It was too late though. With my arms stretched out I fell head first down, down, down along the buildings side and straight into the pavement below.
* * *
The murder of Fredrick Saxon (though they didn't actually have his name for the paper) and my suicide was to hit front page of the newspaper the next day but as an unexpected bonus they got to add the unexplainable disappearance of my body from the morgue before anyone could even ID my body. What kind of sicko steals a dead body anyway? For now, my superhero days are over... but who's to say I won't come back from the grave? After all, This is only the beginning!
