The story so far:
The next day Mr. Springfield and I had everything ready and so we began teaching. I started working with the twins well Mr. Springfield worked with Jim to get him used to the drum kit. At the same time I had Carry teach Teddy to sing. Eric and Scott learned quickly, they had managed to get the basics down and could play one or two simple tunes halfway through the month. Jim had gotten used to the kit and had begun experimenting on the beats he could play, how fast he could play them, and trying to make original beats. Rose practised on the keyboard a fare bit as well even though she played like an angel already. Teddy on the other hand... well it was slow going for him. Carry was indeed a great singer but she was, how to put it, a harsh teacher, which is funny because its obvious she liked him. One of my friends in my old school would have called her a 'tsundere' which means something along the lines of 'to turn away in disgust to show affection' I didn't really get it but either way it wasn't helping Ted learn. After a few more day's I stepped in and told her she needs to stop being so harsh, to take a kinder approach. And so she tried. She blushed the whole time and Teddy seemed baffled and unsure. Everyone was having one hell of a time trying no to laugh at them since they really did start to get somewhere. It was strange and entertaining but it was working. By the end of the month Teddy had caught up to the rest.
Before long we started to creating a song. The tune would be played with simple notes for the twins because no matter how fast they progress, they would still be beginners. They wouldn't be ready for anything complicated yet. The lyrics for the song were going to be about how we felt about being treated because of are red hair without getting a chance to show what kind of people we are and that we just want to get along with everyone. That was a given. The real question was who would be the one to write the lyrics. Everyone turned to me then Jim said “You write them, Andy”
“Yeah!” the twins said together “I'm sure you'd write something amazing and you have the most free time since you don't have to practice” Erik continued “We all want you to do it!” Scott finished.
“I'm flattered, but no. I want this to work as much as you but I haven't had to endure as long or as much as you all. After standing up for Teddy everyone keeps a distance from me despite my losing the fight. all I deal with is being shunned. I think the person to write it should be the one who has gone through the most.” I said.
Everyone started to look around at each other. Then Rose said “If that's the case I think it should be Teddy. Up until you arrived Andy, Teddy was beaten almost every other day... It was amazing and horrifying to see you come to school every day knowing that you were going to be beaten” she finished, talking more to him then me at the end. Jim nodded In agreement.
Blushing and with some difficulty Carry said “It's not that I care... but I think Rose is right... Ted goes through the most... not that I've ever noticed...”
“I think we can all agree on that!” called out the twins together.
“It's settled then. Teddy, we want you to right the lyrics. Will you do it for us?”
He looked at me, then around the room, and then to the floor. Finally he said “only if I can get some help. I'm not good at rhyming and stuff...”
“I think that would be fine. Who do you want to help you?” I asked.
At first I though he might ask me to help but instead he surprised everyone when he said “I want Carry's help”
Carry looked shocked and her face lit up like a Christmas tree. “M-m-me?! Why me?!” she blurted “Like hell I want to!”
“Because I like you and I like it when you help me.” Teddy said looking her in the eye with a small smile. “Besides you want to help me right? I know you say and act the opposite of what you really wanna say and do.” You could almost see Carry melt before the small, scrawny boy with every word he said. This was funny, cute, and amazing. No one actually knew that he understood her feelings.
It was obvious that there was no way Carry would be able to resist his words. So finally she folded and said “F-fine, b-bu-but you're totally wrong! I'm doing it so you'll be quiet!” Teddy gave a big smile. Everyone just watched as the sparks flew between the two.
After they finished writing the lyrics and all of us tuned are sound to the song, we began practising it until it was all we could think of and then practised some more. As we practised I realized this had to be one of the best things to happen to them. They all seemed happy and exited, so much so they hardly ever thought of their wounds and any mental assaults they received were brushed off. They'll be sad if it doesn't work but even if this backfires they can still be happy working on the music. I believe I showed them something no one can ever take away from them. No matter how dark the times they'll be able to make a smile.
As the talent show drew closer and we got better, it became apparent that many of the other students were becoming aware of are plan to participate. The majority of people was indifferent about this, it is likely they figured we would make fools of are selves, but a few people seemed to be curious and some seemed furious. People from in my class' who have been around me always seemed unsure of me but then one found out about are participation in the show and suddenly everyone was curious. They started to ask me questions every now and then well still trying to hold up a front of hatred toward me. I found it kind of strange but slightly amusing. On the other hand the people who were more up tight about being against redheads and were more likely to punch are teeth out started acting more threatening. The act turned into a constant attack, mostly focused on me. This was probably because they saw me as the one leading the redheads. I managed to fend of most attacks but when I did get taken out, I did my best to not let the others know about it.
By the time it was a week before the talent show everyone seemed ready. Everyone was determined and exited. We were ready to blow some minds. To celebrate are hard work we decided it was finally time to come up with a band name. It took little time to come up with it. We decided to call are selves “The Red Rockers”!
After coming up with the name we packed up for the day. Once everyone had left the room Mr. Springfield and I talked about a few things that we wanted to do for the show like a costume idea, then when we finished I headed for the door as well. I wanted to hurry because Rose had said earlier that she wanted to talk about something after practice and that she would be waiting outside. Stepping out the front doors I discovered three guys standing around her. They were some of the people who took there anger towards redhead to a different level. They were some of the ones that would actually attack us rather then shun us. Oddly enough it seemed like they were talking to her. On the other hand she didn't look to pleased about the topic so I started rushing over. Rose noticed me coming and suddenly looked full of despair. I was confused but I quickly forgot my confusion and became enraged when one of them grabbed her by the hair and shook her. “Andy!” She cried out as another one started grabbing at her. Before it could go any farther I took a running jump at the one groping her. As he turned to see me jump, I stretched out my legs before me and drove them into the attackers face sending him flying off his feet. Quickly picking myself up after hitting the ground myself, I turned to the one holding her by the hair. He was frozen in shock. I took no time to bury my fist in his stomach then punch him in the jaw well he went to double over knocking him onto his back. The third guy caught me around the neck before I could turn to him. And again, before I could force myself free, I felt cold steel against the underside of my jaw. Needless to say I froze. Rose was still as well as she watched and whimpered. “You would really pull a knife in a fist fight? Coward!”
“Ha! We planned to come at you with knifes from the beginning!”
“Wow and you think I'm the creep. The ones that should be shunned are you, your buddy's there on the ground, and anyone else bad enough to actually attack someone because of the colour of their hair. Even more so for pulling a knife. Come on fight fair!” I demanded.
“Fair?” he laughed “tell you what. I'll let you go so you can at least face me when cut you open. Okay?” he said in a deranged sounding voice. moving the knife away, he gave me a shov. I turned to face him, but he was already charging at me. Reflexively I through up my arms to try and block his knife from stabbing me anywhere that would kill me. It worked but I ended up with a deep gash on my left arm rendering it useless. Rose screamed as she stared in horror at my arm as blood rushed out. My attacker rushed me again and as he did some of the teachers still in the school started running out to see what was all of the commotion. It was to late for him to try and stop when he noticed the teachers watching as the blade had already slashed halfway across my chest. Once the blade came out of the other end of my chest I could see him turning to run. Then everything started to go dark. The only thing I could think was that guy had to be insane. Because of this the guys are gonna wanna call it all off... all that hard work... will go... to... waist... and that was it.
When I woke up again I was laying in a hospital bed. Feeling confused I went to sit up only to feel sharp pain run through my chest. Looking down at my chest, I went to pull back the blankets with my left hand. Again I felt pain. This time I turned my head to the left and carefully lifted my arm up to see it wrapped in gauze. Setting my arm down again, I grabbed the blankets with my right this time and pulled them down. My chest was also wrapped in gauze. “well this sucks” I said out loud.
In the afternoon the next day Teddy, Rose, and the rest came to visit me together. Rose almost ran into the room then kneeled down beside the bed. It was apparent that they didn't let her come with me when I was taken to the hospital. The first thing out of her mouth was “are you doing okay?!” She looked like she was about to cry again.
Smiling I said “I'll be fine. I just can't move to fast or to much in case I pull a stitch. I'm sad that I wont get to play in the talent show with you guy now though. I can't play the bass like this.” they all fell awkwardly silent. “Let me guess? You don't want to play know because one insane fool cut me a few times.” now they looked depressed and bothered by how easily I saw through them. “Come on guys... don't let one nutcase ruin it all! All that work we put into this... do you really want to just through it all away? There is always going to be jerks at the school no matter what you do, but a lot of thous people... If you just show them you're not a bad person things will change! You can make new friends, you won't have to fear the bully's anymore!” I fell silent for a moment, then I continued “If you give up on them, not only will you get nowhere in life, you'll be just as bad as them! Letting your fear rule you. Rise above them and try to get along with them. You don't even have to make friends with them but at the very least get along with them. Go to that talent show and play the song. Show thous people ruled by fear that they are wrong about you.” I finished.
Teddy sniffed a laugh then said “Jim wont admit it but he didn't want us to quit either. He still wants to do this... and he told us he would be like this.” I turned and looked at Jim. he only shrugged and looked away. “do you really think this work just like that? People are going as far as trying to put put you in the hospit-”
“I told you! That guy was crazy! No one in the right mind is going to come at you with a knife like that especially over something as small as us doing something in the talent show not even the real jerks would do that. If anything you should see this as a good sign!”
“Good sign?!” the twins shouted “Are you sure you're in you're right mind?!”
“Yes. What I'm saying is they're scared that we will succeed! They are scared that people will stop listening to them and realize that redheads aren't all evil jerks. Take it as a good sign and don't let the fools win. You can do it!”
After some silence, Rose said “If you really think this is right... then I'll do it... but don't you dare let this happen to you again!”
“I'll try my best” I said with a small smile.
The rest all seemed to sigh, then the twins said together “Fine, fine. You win. We'll do it... but don't we need you? It won't sound the same!”
“Switch the acoustic guitar for the bass then. You know enough to play my part. Beside we don't really need three guitars up there anyway.” I said.
“... All... all right. If that's what you think would be best...” Scott said by himself.
“I guess Carry and I are in too then. Can't really let you go up without singers can we?”
“Good! Then good luck! I'll see if I can talk someone into telling me go to watch the show!” with that, everyone except Rose left after talking for a little longer. Once we were alone I asked “So what is it that you wanted to say but couldn't in front of the others?”
“Oh you're good aren't you...?” she said starting to blush “The other day I was going to ask you... if... maybe you..." she took a deep breath "like me?”
I just looked at her for a moment then said “Well... I do, yeah. To me, you look like an angel and your personality gives the same impression!” her face brightened up as she smiled and blushed. “Let's do something together once I'm better. Sound good? You might have to think of what though... I'm mostly just a kick back and relax kind of guy when I'm not playing music.”
“Kicking back sound good to me just the same.” she said I couldn't help but grin.
The day of the talent show, I was allowed to come and watch. When are band was announced I heard a mix of snickering and wonder pass over the crowed. The guys stepped out onto the stage looking confident and when they were ready, they announced themselves again then the song we had made to play. Once the music started going the crowed seemed surprised, they went completely quiet as they listened closer to the lyrics and the sound. Then I could hear feet start to tap. I saw heads start to bob. And soon the crowed started to get really exited. By the end of the show everyone was cheering to them and shouting nothing but complements for the performance, some even wanted an encore. I could tell from the back of the large gym they were shocked by the reaction to the point of being in tears of joy. They had all been through so much they deserved it.
Without a second though The Red Rockers won the talent show. They quickly became some of the most popular people in school. Despite their sudden popularity though they continued to meet in the band room at lunch and when I finally came back they even through a party. They were all exited, they all thanked me for getting them going and trying to make a change in the school. In the excitement Rose had jumped on me and gave me a kiss. At the same time Teddy managed to steel one from Carry. She started to melt but then she snapped out of it and started to chase after him shacking her fists well blushing. Everyone laughed. With this the school ended up with one of the most respectful, music loving student body the district had ever seen and we enjoyed the rest of are school days in peace well rocking out!
