"The Beginning"

On the Way  by tchoppy

The woman ran down the alley. The click of her heels echoed on the pavement.

“Help me!” She screamed. The figure lunged at her and knocked her down. Her red dress tore as she skidded across the pavement. Tears streamed down her face and she raised her head to look at the man, hoping for mercy.

“Please, please don’t hurt me.” She begged, dragging herself against the alley wall. She hugged her legs tightly.

The man chuckled; it was a low throaty sound. He bent down towards her, and wiped her blonde hair away from her face. “Your beauty cannot protect you now.” His mouth opened wide revealing white teeth, in front of her eyes they quickly became longer and pointer.

The woman screamed. It sounded hollow and was swallowed up by the alley. Out of the corner of her eyes she saw more figures hanging back along the shadows.

With a snarl, the man attacked her neck. Her head hit the concrete, and then she knew no more. Her last memory was of him sucking on her neck, draining her of her life.

----

Sedrick sat on a soft leather seat. He was in the family private jet, on his way to Kelowna. They were just leaving the Center Island airport in downtown Toronto.

“Do you have any more questions?” Sedrick’s mother asked. She sat beside him on the jet. He had spent the remaining night asking her questions about vampires, to see what was true and what wasn’t. Apparently not everything was the way the movie world had portrayed it.

“No.” He murmured. His head still hurt, so much had happened in the last couple of days. He missed his normal life. The man could not wait until his sister could deal with some of this stuff.

“Alright, well the sun is rising, so I am going to lie down in the back cabin. When we get there, make sure you wake me.” His mother stood and leaned over to give him a kiss, Sedrick jerked back. His mother chuckled, “Don’t worry I won’t bite.”

“You’re not my mother anymore.” He said annoyed. “Don’t even try to touch me. I’m only going along with this till we reach Susie. Then we’ll both decide what to do.”

His mother waived her hand, “Whatever darling. Once we reach your sister, then I will tell you want I want from you.” She smiled; it looked menacing on her petite face. “You don’t think I came back for you do you.” She laughed and turned and headed to the cabin.

Sedrick watched her leave. He hadn’t even thought to wonder why his mother would announce to him she was a vampire. Now that she mentioned she had another motive, his hands began to shake.

When his mother had been human, she had been cold and bitter and all about appearances. Since she had become a vampire, he was certain she had not changed much. He was also certain she was incapable of love. Obviously she wanted Sedrick’s and Susie’s help, but for what? Money was no problem for her, what else could they offer?

The man closed his eyes. He needed to rest before they got to Kelowna, he needed to think clearly. He needed to be on the ball when they found Susie, as he was not sure what his mother would do, or what she was capable of.
