The story so far:
I stand close by watching as things reorient themselves. The house changes color, the yard turns to dust, and is replaced by a pool. Within the house stands a new family, going about their daily live.
You must be wondering how things would all fall in to place and how people would forget all that happened with the original family?
Well that happened the moment they were turned to dust. What is left is just my small little memory of their lives.
I am the sole keeper of memories of all those that have been erased.
All cause of my duty.
What kind of duty is this anyway? It hurts like hell, I'll tell you that much. All these faces...all these people...all of them glued in to my mind. All of them stabbing at my insides, asking to leave, asking to return to the life style they once lead. None of them leave and the stabbing persists.
Duty. Duty. Duty. Duty.
I wish someone would just get this over with already.
I don't want to do this anymore. I wish someone would just take over. My predecessor.
You see getting me a predecessor isn't as easy as you may think it is.
There are plenty of requirements. They need to be strong, and courageous.
They need to have known one who had been erased, and then remember...remember those whom had melted out of this world with my touch.
And most importantly they need to know my name.
I stand up. It is time to leave these useless thoughts and the new family alone.
I have to make sure that all has gone smoothly. Well I guess that leaves that one kid to check up on. Robby.
I run to his house which is conveniently placed a few doors down.
I knock on the door...which is quickly answered by a lady smiling.
"Hi. I'm your neighbor." I say looking into her eyes checking for any sign of question and confusion. And of course it is there.
"Sorry. Which neighbor would that be?"
"You know sweet little Tamara?"
"Sorry I don't know any Tamara" she says looking at me as if I'm crazy.
"But I live just a few doors down" I say pointing at Tamara's house.
"That’s where Lisa and her family live. I don't know who you are and I certainly don't want to find out" She begins to close the door, but before she can do so I catch a glimpse of a child watching the scene as it takes place.
He scratches his head as if trying to remember something. I now stand in front of a closed door, and I am smiling.
Maybe my predecessor would come quickly.
