The next morning, Emily woke up to the pleasant sound of birds chirping, through her opened window. She was usually the first one to get out of bed, so she got up and looked in Charlie’s room, to see if he woke up yet. He was still fast asleep, one hand hugging his Bionicle, and the other in his mouth. Then, she peeked into her parents’ room. Her dad was still snoozing, and beside him was a big pile of blankets. Emily guessed that was her mom, sleeping under the warm covers. But just to be sure, she slowly crept into the bedroom, trying not to be noticed. As she did, Emily noticed that the covers weren’t rising and lowering, as if someone was breathing under there. She tiptoed as close as she could get to the bed, then slowly pulled off the covers. There was nothing but pillows! Where could her mom be? It was too early to go to work, so she couldn’t have left already...
