Two Steps Back Ch 5  by mayday8281

Howard's recognition of Jane startles her.  She quickly scans his whole face, body even, to spark some memory.

Dr. Allister is just as shocked as Jane is.  "Do you two know each other?"

As Jane shakes her head side to side, Howard jumps up. "Yes."

"Well, how about we all just sit down.  Talk about this.  I don't want things getting out of control so quickly.  Dr. Allister turns to Jane, "Have you ever seen or met Howard before?"

Again, Jane shakes her head "no," still searching in her mind for any thing that would connect her memory to her sight of Howard.

Howard is watching her, observing her, but he can't contain his excitement any longer.  Without even waiting for Dr. Allister to continue, Howard breaks in."You were there.  When it happened.  You were only a little girl.  You were scared.  And crying.  I was suppose to tell you that it would be alright.  That you would be okay.  But I was scared for you.  I was only 13.

"I saw you all of the time.  Every time.  It was my job to help you.  I knew I wasn't doing a good job." Obviously upset, Howard reaches into his pocket and brings out an inhaler.

"That's good, Howard.  Take some breaths."  Dr. Allister's words were soothing to Jane's ears after hearing all of this.  "Don't worry.  We have plenty of time to talk.  No need to rush this now."

"Is it possible, Dr. Allister?" Jane asks, but doesn't feel her mouth move.

"Well, Jane.  I am not well-versed in the ways of abductions of any sort."  Dr. Allister pauses, pouring everyone a glass of water.  "But Howard seems very certain that he was there.  He knows details that neither of us have told him yet."

"Ya."  Jane thinks back.  Thinks back to her memories, when she is being carried out of her house.  Can she see anyone in the shadows?  A young boy, sent to help her, but just as scared as she was?

"Okay, Howard.  Are you feeling better now?"  asks Dr. Allister.

"Yes.  I think I can continue at a slower pace."  Howard is nervous as well, but offers a meek smile towards Jane.  "I hope this helps you as much as me."

Jane smiles and gives a reassuring nod.  "Me, too, Howard."

"When I was a lot younger, maybe 8 or 9, I was awoken several nights in a row by a blinding light," Howard is facing Jane, as if they were the only two in the room.  "After the third or fourth night, someone, or should I say something, came into my room.  I was so frightened.  But a young girl was there.  She told me everything would be taken care of.  She told me not to worry.  She was there a lot.

"I am not sure how often that happened.  I don't know if it happened once and it feels like it happened nightly.  Or if it actually did happen nightly.  It's always the same memory, it seems."

Maybe that's why my eight-year old self felt like she had been through this before.  Because she had, Jane thinks to herself.

Howard continues. "Years later, when I was 13, I was awoken by the same glaring light.  Only this time, I wasn't picked up and carried.  The thing took my hand, like my mother would, and we walked onto the light.  We walked over the trees, pass the moon.  And just when I started to ask where we were going, I see this house.

"It was an old country styled house.  Two stories, with a wide country porch out front.  The house itself was white, with blue shutters and blue trim.  It sat on a large lot of land, with this one oak tree, bigger than the house itself, sitting right out front, with a..."

"Black tire swing," Jane finished.

Dr. Allister turns to Jane.  "How do you know that, Jane?" he asks.

"Because that was her house," Howard answers, then lowers his voice. "When she was abducted."

Jane looks as if she were about to cry.  Dr. Allister breaks in, "How about a five minute break?"

"Yes, I could stand to use the restroom. Pardon me."  Howard leaves the room.

Dr. Allister lowers his voice.  "We can stop for the day, if you would like, Jane.  We don't need to continue today."

"No, this is good." Jane knows she needs to hear the rest of Howard's story.  "I like knowing there is someone here that knows what I'm going through.  No offense, against you, Dr. Allister.  You've been great, but..."

"I understand, Jane." Dr. Allister smiles.  "You don't need to explain anything to me."

"Can I pour you both some more water?" Howard asks politely.

Dr. Allister looks at Jane.  "Yes, please."

Everyone takes their seats again.  After a quick sip of water, Jane turns to Howard.  "Please continue, Howard.  You were on the light, coming into my house."

Quietly, at first, Howard continues.  "We walk right up to the second floor of the house.  I see no doors or open windows.  But we just walk right through the walls.  It was almost like the light was cutting a hole in wall for us to use.

"The thing let go of my hand, and I just stopped walking.  I wasn't told to stop, but I just knew.  I saw this little bed.  And a little girl sitting there.  I saw you, Jane.  Only I never really knew who you were.

"You wide eyed and confused.  Scared even.  I tried to talk to tell you it would be okay.  But I felt scared too.  I didn't know what was going to happen to you.  And I felt like it wasn't the first time this happened either."

Jane nods her head.  She knows how Howard feels.  She felt like it wasn't the first time as well.  "Maybe we should end for today?"

Dr. Allister nods in agreement.  "Yes, today has been very productive.  And very emotional.  Shall we set up another appointment?"

"Well, it's up to Jane.  I don't want to cause her any unneeded anguish," Howard replies with concern.

"Oh, yes.  I definitely want to schedule another appointment."  Jane is surprised at her own enthusiasm.  "And I would like to try the hypnosis therapy again, Dr. Allister.  I want to see if I can see Howard."
