I'm a bit confused on one thing.
First the shadows explain her soul can not feel pain, or pain in the classic sense, then at the end they tell her she will feel intense pain and be left with scars.

So, can she feel pain or...?

The answer to your question: no, she can't feel 'pain' in the classical sense of the word, but since she hasn't passed into the other dimension yet and she still thinks like a human, they have to use a term she is familiar with to convey a much deeper meaning. There is no invented word for what she's going to feel. They use 'pain', 'scars' to translate an untranslatable experience into a language she can understand and relate to. Of course, the translation is only approximate and misses the essence.

Excellent- a 5 from me. I don't care for much of the science fiction I've encountered on this site, but this story definitely rises above.

Well...I am surprised that 39 people or entities have read this piece but only 4 of them felt compelled to vote...this is a curiosity...that most dimension travelers cannot accept.
I was reading an earlier post from InEn this morning and he/she rightly said that the voting scores should be included in the comments. I score on a simple method.
1 star = You had the courage to post your work.
2 Star = I could follow the story without backtracking a dozen times to understand the context.
3 Star = The story held my attention.
4 Star = I was interested and liked the storyline. Like: I will drink and Orange Soda but I prefer Root Beer.
5 Star = I actually want to continue the story line and publish the next chapter.

I scored you a four because I have not written the next chapter.
