Star Struck Starlyn
by kissthepony
It was a rainy day in the middle of April. There seemed to be no end to the beating of rain against the plexi-glass windows. Screams came from within the building, as well as hateful words through clenched teeth, cries of agony and defeat as people were told their loved ones did not make it through the night. Two women stood outside, one’s face silhouetted by the light inside, and one’s hair hide her face. Her stomach was enlarged, and her hand was on it. She was slightly hunched over, her face contorted by a slight pain in her stomach. She muttered something inaudible to the other woman, who was pulled from a day dream and looked to the other, then darted inside. As the doors slid closed, silence enveloped the woman, and her eyes slowly rose to the top of the building, staring up at it. The rain pounded on her back and ran down her neck. A single star could be seen through the clouds, one she had never noticed before. For a moment, she just stared at it, though it did not move like an airplane would, it was stationary. The automatic doors slid open, and the other woman darted out with a wheel chair. The noise broke the silence, and the stargazing woman slowly lowered herself into it, and was wheeled inside. This place, in some eyes a safe haven, in others a torture chamber, was none other than a hospital. Ocean Meadow hospital- oddly named considering it was neither near an ocean or a meadow, rather smack dab in a rather large metropolis in the land locked state of Kansas. It wasn’t the first time that the one woman had been standing outside a hospital with an enlarged stomach staring up at the sky. Three years ago, it had been daylight, and the sky was clear. Being as before she had been in Arizona, in front of Lincoln hospital, the precipitation that ran down her back had been sweat. Before, she had been with her mother and not her sister. Formerly, labor had been easy, and she could barely remember the pain because of all the pain meds. She held the baby in her arms, and went home the next day. This time, it would not go as smoothly. She was on vacation, visiting her younger sister, in a state she barely knew. Her mother was on a third honeymoon with her father in Tokyo, and therefore was not at home. Her husband- Mattrice (Matty) Fenda- was on a business trip in Canada, despite his attempts to get himself out of it so close to the due date of his second daughter. He had not been able to attend the birthing of his first daughter because he was at his mother’s funeral and could not find anyone else to greet those who came when he got the call that she was in labor. Whatever reason Matty had, everyone knew it was legible, he was an honest man. Though, either way, the woman had not wanted to be without family during her delivery, so she took her daughter and went to her sister’s. Right now, her first daughter, Moliana, was being watched by the house keeper, who was quite good with children. Unlike the former birthing, the woman- Meliany- didn’t have a coach. Her mother had given birth to seven children, while her fifth child, Meliany’s younger sister, was unmarried and still a virgin. It was not that she was homely- she was just not practiced in the sport of picking out men. Half of them where afraid of her, the other half weren’t interested. Thus, in her mid twenties, she was still single. It was a good thing that both of them weren’t first timers, because some of the crushing pain Meliany felt was lessened by laughter at Katie (her sister)’s frantic cries of “help help she’s gonna have this baby right here in the waiting room!!” Between this burst of laughters, trying to appear as if she was unfazed by the fact that she could go into delivery at any second, she told her to “Sit her butt down and quit her whimpering because it was almost as if she was the father of the baby.” Katie had tried to protest, but couldn’t think of anything to say, and plopped herself down in a chair next to Meliany. Katie was still upsetting herself, glancing at Meliany every few seconds to make sure she was still breathing. Thirty minutes after Katie finally took a seat, Meliany was being wheeled down the hallway into one of the pre delivery rooms, where she was told to lay down on the bed. In doing this, the nurse was able to check how far along she was. She was barely dilated, so the nurse gave her a mild pain killer, and then exited. Katie continued to be anxious-pacing back and forth until Meliany had to again tell her to sit down. Having no reason to ignore her sister’s request, Katie sat. Yet even then, she fidgeted and kept looking to Meliany every few seconds. Meliany couldn’t help but wish that the nurse would return and give Katie some type of anesthetic, just to get her to calm down. Alas, Meliany knew that only the pregnant party was given the anesthetic, and therefore she would have to deal with Katie’s fidgeting for a while longer. To get her mind off of Katie, she looked around the room. One bed directly in front of her was occupied, though the woman seemed to be sleeping. Now that she was not paying attention to Katie, she noticed a soft whimpering sound coming from beside her, almost like a wounded dog. Yet as she listened, it became louder, turning into sobs. There was a curtain separating her from the one crying, and she hesitated to invade the other’s privacy. She glanced at Katie, who seemed to be in a fidgety sleep. The nurses all seemed to ignore the crying, which was something Meliany couldn’t do. Taking the initiative, she threw her legs over the side of the bed and on wobbly knees she stood.
