Thank you very much for your comments. I'll definitely keep an eye on my tenses in the future. I see your point about revealing that it's fantasy earlier, however the fantasy aspects are introduced within the first page (in Word) and it's a five and a half page story. That's hardly "halfway down". I will take your suggestions into consideration, though.

This will be my sixth year doing NaNo. It's crazy fun. This year, I'm pretty sure I'll be writing book 6 of my fantasy series.

Music is good. I also get a lot of ideas from watching movies or TV. A character, a scene, a snippet of dialogue and the 'what if's start. When I'm really, stuck, zoning out in front of a video game usually gets me going again.
