Little Jacob: Chapter 3  by jermccloud

"Hey!  What are you two losers doing?"  It was Jared.  He was the orphanage's bully.  Before Little Jacob had a chance to think, Jared snatched his picture from the table.  He looked at the picture for a moment.  "What's this?" he asked Jacob forcfully.  Jacob didn't answer but began to feel the rage inside him built up.  He wanted his picture back, it was the first thing in three years that brought him any kind of happiness.

"I asked you a question freak!"  Jared said as he leaned over into Little Jacob's face.  "Jared, just leave him alone!"  Charlotte knew how important that picture was to Jacob, he practically just had a break through, and here, Jared was about to mess everything up.  Jared laughed, crumpling up the paper and throughing it behind him.  "Hey Freak!  You're gonna let your girlfriend take up for you like that?"  Little Jacob could no longer with stand it.  It may not have seemed like a big deal to others, but it felt like another tragedy to Jacob, Jared had taken away the one most important thing from him.

Jacob screamed hystarically, charging at Jared, pushing him down with a loud thud.  Jacob began hitting  Jared over and over.  He was no longer in control of himself, something else had now taken over Jacob.

But then Jacob heard something in the background.  It was Charlotte.  She was crying, "Please Jacob stop!"  "What have I done?" Jacob thought.  Was he about to loose his one and only friend also?  He stopped. Jared was breathing rapidly on the ground.  Jacob turned to face Charlotte.  The look on her face, to see her cry, just broke him to peaces.  He made a promise to himself that night.  That he would never fight, even again.  Especially if it was going to bring this kind of sadness to the world.  He couldn't take his eyes off Charlotte, knees on the ground, he hands covering her face, still weeping.

"Hey, Freak!"  Jacob turned around just in time to face Jared's fist.  One hit was all it took.  Little Jacob's head hit the floor of the damp cool grass.  Just before going unconsious, Jacob could see the dark sky, the yellow twinkling stars and the full moon, just like in his picture, staring back at him.

Jacob was awaken by the chirping of the birds outside.  The sun from the window was bright, hitting Jacob's face.  He noticed that he was in a room of his own this time.  He looked over to see Charlotte standing by his bed.  "Shhhh." she said.  She seemed happy again.  "I'm not suppose to be in here.  They um..."  Charlotte paused for a moment, not sure how to tell him.  "they thought it best to keep you away from the others for now."  Jacob said nothing.  He wasn't sure how Charlotte had felt about him since the other night when he lost control of himself.

"I have something for you." Charlotte had a big smile on her face.  She pulled out a wrinkled piece of paper from her notebook that was on her lap.  It was Jacob's picture, she found it and flattened it back out.

Jacob looked up at Charlotte and smiled.
