Her voice returns to her sun-burned ears again and again. Nothing in sight could have caused the echo and she stands in the middle of the plain, blinking at the vast nothingness.

She is startled out of her near catatonic state as she realizes the voice is getting closer...

Seriously, though, you kept the neurotic thing going. I love that he only eats vanilla (it's the finest of the flavors) and is a bit horrified by the girl's choice of ice cream.

I always get two different flavors, myself...

This was a great place to stop. Just right to make the reader want more. (And I think that's what it's all about.)

Jamie/Lucas whirling thoughts came across well, too. I love to read the progression of this story.
