Peace, What Peace?  by bobbileder
Well, that didn't last long - the feeling of peace was over before it even started - as soon as I closed my eyes I heard a loud bang, so I tippy toed to my window, pulled the curtain to the side and peered out into the cold, dark night; but I saw nothing. A moment later I heard the same bang and realized the noise wasn't coming from the street - it was coming from inside the house. Why weren't my parents waking up? Why weren't the lights being turned on in the house, and where on earth was Sam, my little brother? He usually would awake if he heard even a flea sneeze.I stepped out into the hallway and looked left, then right. Nope, there was nothing there. No sign of anyone not even Elsa, the newest addition to our feline family.  I took a few more baby steps and decided to see if Sam was awake; his door was locked – how odd? So I walked further down the long Berber carpeted hall and tried to get into my parents’ bedroom; that door was open but I couldn’t see them in their bed. I decided to risk getting in trouble by turning on the light – after all I’d rather have them yell at me “Rebecca, what on earth are you doing? It’s the middle of the night for goodness sake,” - yes, I could hear it now, maybe I better not take the risk, but in the end curiosity prevailed and I flicked the switch. They weren’t in bed – where were they? Where was my family? Where was Elsa? Why wasn’t she purring and rubbing herself against my leg? Panic set in and I ran to the phone in my room and dialed my neighbors - the Oakley’s, who lived two doors down the street and were close friends of my parents - to see if they knew of any plans my parents had. Maybe they went somewhere when I snuck out earlier, or worse yet, maybe they were out looking for me.
