That Winter Evening
Siya is sitting near the window looking at the red buds spread all over their courtyard. She somehow feels a natural link with those little red flowers. These are a type of small red roses found only in these snowy mountains. They are locally called ‘siya’. There is an interesting story of its origin. It is said that these flowers are a result of Devi Sita’s blessings. This plant was originally a non-flowering thorny plant. When Ram and Sita, during the period of their exile, were passing through this region, this thorny plant caught hold of Devi sita’s sari in an attempt to stop her. She e was touched by the gesture of this unattended plant. She blessed it with the power to survive in the worst snowfall and to bear beautiful red flowers. It is said that since then, this plant became as important as ‘tulsi’ in every house. Hence named ‘siya’ after ‘Siya-Ram’. Siya can see that the winter is in its peak because siya roses are in full bloom.
She is very excited today and why shouldn’t she be? Raj is coming home after completing his studies abroad. She is desperate to go and see in their neighboring house. She was a part of preparations that were going on there since last couple of days. In fact she is the one who arranged his room. Raj’s mother is very fond of siya. She once said to siya’s mother “your daughter is such a darling. I never felt the absence of a daughter in this house.” Then lovingly placing her hand over siya’s head she said “how lucky will be your mother-in-law! You will be a perfect siya of the house.”
Siya looks at the clock hung over the wall. Its half past eight. He mus t have arrived by now. Baba had already gone out on work. Her kid sister guddi is her sole companion. Guddi is still fast asleep. Siya can no longer bear the anxiety. But how can she go without any reason? Engrossed in her thoughts, she starts stepping towards the door. But ma called her from behind saying “where are you going? Its snowing outside. Raj must have just arrived. Don’t disturb them now. We will go in the evening.” Siya somehow managed to hide her anxiety and replied firmly “what ma! I don’t want to meet anyone. I just remembered that aunty had asked for fresh siya roses. I’ll be back soon.” Satisfied with her own reply, she quickly moved out.
