He sits on the rocks, unsure of himself. In front of him, sun is cool orange and the breeze is soothing. But still, the frustration inside him is like a tide mounting high by each passing moment. He pulled the guitar strings and played on and on. As if, competing with the mighty sea, which in its own rhythm kept hitting the rocks with its waves. He played non-stop, till as though sea surrendered and became calm. Exhausted and a bit relieved, he sat down. He couldn’t believe his eyes. She was there, the same Sunday mass girl, with her eyes closed and enjoying his music. “Why did you stop? It was so good.” She said opening her eyes. He kept staring at her dumbstruck and couldn’t hear anything after that. She was saying something and when she put forward her hand, he realized she was introducing herself. “Hi, I’m Helen. I’m studying arts and I love music.” He heard her saying. “Hi, it’s nice meeting you. I’m David. Air-force pilot.” He replied.
This was a very strange feeling and David was experiencing this for the first time. It was a feeling which filled every lonely corner of his heart. He liked talking to her, listening to her and being with her. Initially, they met accidentally in the evenings when she came for walk. But gradually their meetings became more frequent and then regular. He would drop her home before 6.30 p.m. she often insisted that her parents won’t mind her being out till a couple of hours more. But he would reply “don’t take undue advantage of the freedom they give you.” Helen liked him for this caring and humble nature.
They were unaware how their friendship grew into love. But neither of them has proposed each other so far. As the days progress into weeks, David’s anxiety increases. He can neither go back with this burden in his heart nor is he able to disclose his feelings to her. It is his personal background that keeps him tongue-tied. However he knows that she is madly in love with him but he also knows that her parents will never accept him for their only daughter. This thought always forces him to take his feet backwards. Helen on the other hand is a very confident girl. She has already accepted him as her groom. She knows his feeling for her and that why he is hesitating. She too wants to clear the things before he leaves.
