The Bread (2)

Maybe he didn't need to eat. It would become necessary, eventually. Perhaps it could wait. Maybe later something would sound good.
There must be better ways to spend one's evening. More interesting ways. He considered the options.
Nothing sounded interesting.
He stared vacantly across the room. An old woman unfolded her napkin, and folded it back along every crease. Her hands shook. She took a plastic pill box from her purse, stuck out her tongue, and placed the pill carefully upon it.
"Here's your Pepsi." He looked up and blinked. "Do you need more time?"
The old woman took a shaky sip of water and swished it around in her mouth. Her red lipstick left a greasy stain on the glass.
"No."
"Okay, what would you like?"
He looked at his Pepsi.
"Nothing."
She stared.
He took out his wallet, dropped a bill on the table and walked past her out the door. The waitress stood there. She didn't turn to watch him leave.
