" Serina... " I heard my name called through the darkness. Jolting upright I hid in the warm comfort of my blankets, then stared into the shadows. " What!? Who is there? " I asked the empty nothingness. There was a pause, as I felt eyes staring me down from somewhere beyond my sight. " Run. " Said the deep voice from my many nightmares.
I got out of bed and hesitantly turned on the light, afraid of what I was going to see. But the only result was my room, no holes, no monsters, only my room. " Just another dream. " I said to myself in reassurance. I looked at my alarm clock, and it was 5:00am. I Can't be getting up this early all of the time, it's driving me crazy. I'm even hearing voices now.
Unable to go back to sleep I turned on the t.v. Nothing was on so to pass time I called Beth, one of my friends. The only one actually. She answered. " Serina? " She asked me. " Yes. " I had answered. " Sooo, another bad dream huh? And what happened to a simple hello? " I have called her alot lately, I'm thankful she still picks up the phone. " Sorry Beth. I'm just a little edgy today. " She laughed. " Yeah, aren't we all! " Then yawned loudly. " What were we talking about again? " She asked me, genuinely lost. " The strange dreams I am having. " I told her. " Oh right! The red skinned, multi-armed, horned dudes! I remember now!" Beth has always been a bit hyper, even when she just wakes up. But I'm quite surprised that she remembers what we last spoke about. " Yes beth, those. " I confirmed to her. " Well I bet living in a house all by your lonesome is making you have funky dreams. " I was going to say that she was most likely right but couldn't. " You know, you should find a boyfriend, then I bet he would keep you to occupied to have any bad dreams. " I huffed, she was bringing up a sore subject. " Beth I've told you a million times, I'm only twenty-two years old, I can wait a long time if I need to. Besides, I'm waiting for the right guy. One that will be strong enough mentally and physically to protect me from anything. Tall, handsome, smart, nice sense of humor, but serious when needed and... " She cut me off from my thoughts and said. " Ughh! There you go again with that dreamy gibberish! Now what have I told you missy? There's no such thing as the perfect man! " ' Click. ' I had hung up on her. That's one thing that upsets me, when everyone I know says that if I don't be a normal girl and go prancing around in high heels and frillies that I'll never attract a man. " I will find him someday... " Keep telling yourself that Serina, keep telling yourself...
Watching the news when an interesting subject caught my attention. " Thirty men and women have gone missing over a single night. Kidnappings? No one knows. " Wonder what is going on? I thought.
For a good while I kept watching the drab news. When somehow in that seemingly short time it became 9:00 o'clock. So I got dressed in my usual outfit of plain pants and a tanktop. Then was getting ready to go out to the city for some shopping, more like window shopping, but anyways.
This morning would be nicer, if my neighbors stupid doberman would stop barking the whole time. Constant non-reasoned barking really aggravates me. So I ask him time and time again, to please muzzle it. But he ends up telling me that dogs are meant to bark and warn people of danger. Then adds, that he suggests I should check out my yard because that's where his dog is seeing or smelling something. The day that he had said that, I went outside and searched for traces of something or someone suspicious. The only weird thing was a hole behind the only tree, in my only one acre plot. In my lowly road front, housing division. The ground has been missing there for a while now, I've even tried filling it in once or twice. But it keeps reappearing, it must be a sink hole I had concluded. I bet it's greatly fueling my dreams. It's pretty scary really, at least two and a half feet wide. Once I tried to see how deep it was by dropping a rock down it. I waited for a long time but it seemed bottomless.
I drove all the way to the city, which was unfortunately not very far. Parked, then walked the sidewalks. There was very interesting things everywhere I looked, an up side to the horror of crowds and pollution. Things like glass dragons, beautiful jewelry, some really cool swords and daggers, and at another shop there was many of my favorite games. But the crowd thickened around me, and I was swept away. I fought, pushing and shoving to try and get through. Only to take two steps forwards and about eight back. Quickly loosing energy, I thought, if you can't get out of the current, let it gradually take you to the edge. So I rode with the flow through a wide alley way.
In the center of the brick walled pass, a woman next to me fell all of a sudden. She must have tripped. But she began screaming soon after. Then people around where she disappeared started yelling and scattering. When the area cleared I saw a hole... With the woman grasping the edge for dear life, screaming and crying for help. Only a few had dared to try though. Even with them trying to pull her up, did she still get pulled beneath. Her screams echoing from under ground.
Horned beasts, with extra appendages and crimson flesh... They had no eyes, and seemed to rely on only scent, hearing and touch. This is just like in my dreams. The frenzied people and myself backed a few feet towards the wall, as if it would protect us somehow. Am I dreaming? No, I can't be. Wait! Maybe my dreams were actually premonitions! Wow, this is just really far fetched. But here they are, dragging people off to who knows where.
" Duck. " A voice from the fleeing crowd in the center of the street had ordered. Me and several others crouched to dodge whatever was coming. When something buzzed past my head, narrowly missing. I thought it was a bullet. So I looked angrilly into the crowd to find who had almost shot me, but never saw anyone with a gun. Then all of the sudden a volley of steel shafted, broadheaded arrows flew from the crowd. Arrows? I had thought it was a bullet because it was traveling so fast. I looked back to see what the person was aiming for, and what I beheld was grusome. Many dead monsters, arrows through their skulls. The projectiles were shot by someone so powerful, that I saw the broadheads deeply embedded into the brick work. I ran as monsters were being shot, falling left and right. In my desperation I did a tricky and rather stupid move. I jumped over one of the holes. Because there were creatures coming from every direction. Then upon landing on the other edge, the street beneath my feet began to rumble, as another hole was being dug. I had nearly fallen into it when an arrow caught my pant leg and redirected me away from danger. I unhappily examined the rip in my calf area, it just added character to the pants, but it sure stung where it had cut me. Who's complaining though, I'm alive right?
It was pandemonium, an utter chaos. As holes kept popping up, swallowing victims whole. Beasts dragging people into the dark damp underworld. I ran as fast as I could to the place where I parked my car. Fumbling with my purse to find the keys. I jammed it into the ignition, revved it up and drove out of the parking lot. For good measure though, I did crush a few creatures on the way. But near home I noticed that some of my tires had gone flat. Must have been the creatures horns that did that.
When I got home I saw that the monsters hadn't reached this far yet. So I rushed inside then jumped over the arm of the couch, landing on the cushion. I grabbed the phone and dialed Beth's number. But she immediately hung up on me. Leave it to Beth to not answer when I really need her. So I dialed my mothers number. " Hello. " She said as I yelled into the receiver. " Mom! It may sound crazy, but monsters are coming! I need you to pick me up! " I waited for her to answer. " Please leave your name and number after the beep. Thank you. " ' Beeeep! ' Ohhhhh! The answering machine!! I don't know anyone else, what am I going to do!?
I felt like breaking down and crying. I threw the phone down and saw on the news, that the beasts and the holes have been rapidly appearing all over. Afterwards the doberman barked the fiercest I have ever heard out of any dog. I guessed that the monsters were coming. So I ran out my front door to see if my neighbor was okay, and to ask if I could ride in his car with him to... Right now I don't really care where I go, just somewhere far from here. Only to see beasts coming from a large hole in my front lawn. I screamed and went back inside locking the door. Then tried the rear, to see if it was clear. But there was a hole right at the first step. A monster was trying to climb into the doorway and grabbed my leg as I was running off.
He tripped me and I fell face first. Then I heard a terrible gurgling noise, as the grip on my ankle loosened. Afterwards though... I only heard him. " Run Serina. It's clear now. " I got up and looked back for who ever was there and only saw a monster with a severed head. He must have left already. I ran for the other door again, and didn't even have to unlock it because it was torn to shreds. Out in the open I saw many dead creatures. With arrow wounds or missing body parts. I started to run for my neighbors house when I kicked something heavy on the porch. Looking down, there was a pretty long dagger. I snatched it up as protection.
Running speedily through the grass, over to the other house. I glanced out of the corner of my eye, and a silver blade poked out from behind the trunk of my tree. Is that man I dreamed about standing over there? I gasped, stopped to go back and see if he was there protecting me. But the momentum of my running caught me off balance, and I continued going forwards into a deep ravinous hole. I screamed as I understood what had just happned. The man called out for me. " Serina!! " I fell and fell, until I landed in something squishy and wet. My eyes hadn't adjusted yet, to the dim and redish glow in the darkness. So I scrambled around in the muck, trying to find a way somewhere. Then I froze. I heard chomping, from someplace around me. I sat there until I could finnally see by the light of the spheres that glowed red. Then wished I couldn't see at all. I gagged and retched as quietly as I could, at this disgusting sight. Looking at what was beneath me, I could see there was a pile of human remains, torn to pieces. Knowing what that noise was, was not very grand either, it was creatures at the bottom digging through the mess, and eating the bodies. I am lucky they didn't hear me, yet...
