"Two Steps Back"

Two Steps Back - Back to where I was...  by abhijithjk

Jane jumped out of the leather couch.. Sweat dripping down from her forehead. Her eyes were wide open now.  She looked around to see the bright white light & the person who had carried her. But she was now in a different room. She sat there trying to gather her thoughts & trying to remember where she was. She looked around & saw Dr. Alister sitting in his easy chair taking down notes. He had his rounded specs on & he was looking into his notes as if searching for the right words..

"Where am I?" Jane asked.. She wasn't too loud when she asked this. It was, as if she was asking herself  this question. Dr. Alister now looking at Jane with his usual calm voice & spoke "We made a lot of progress today Mrs Jane, your husband is waiting downstairs. We can continue our session on Wednesday". Jane tried to get up, her body was covered with her sweat. The air conditioning was cool but in spite of it, her body had heated up. It was as if her body was still in her old room with the bright white light.

Jane got up & composed herself. It all started coming back to her. The past had been coming back to her, a bit too often lately. John had become worried last time Jane screamed out in the night. Dr Alister had tried to calm her down with a few sedatives at first, but when the nightmares continued he suggested therapy. This was her first session & John had promised to pick her up in case it was hard for her.

She thanked Dr. Alister, who had gone back to his notes & was lost in deep thought. She got into the elevator & went down. John stood there at the door with his comforting hug. He was there always for her, even when she was a child. She had lost her mother that same night when her life changed forever. He was never able to completely understand what happened to her that night, but still he would be there always by her side  comforting her. They walked to their car & John held open the door for her. He was such a gentleman, Jane could only say that she was lucky to get him.

Once in the car, she rested her head on the seat & pushed it back. She wanted to see it all again, all over. She had woken up just when she was about to enter the source of the bright white light. She closed her eyes & the tiredness of her body gently rocked her to sleep.

She then saw it again.. There she was the eight year old girl in the firm grip of this stranger. She was too scared to even look up at his face. Like a new born baby, she curled up in his arms. He was carrying her to the door of what looked like a giant golf ball. The light now was not only radiating from the outside but also from an intense beam inside the room. She could make out the faint shadow of four unusually tall human like features. As he took her closer inside she could feel something really non-human about them. It was as if their heads were swollen to the shape of a mushroom. One of them looked different from the rest. A flash of her memory came to Jane now & she saw the face or what looked like the face of this different being.

She could hear the eerie sound of the door closing behind them. The bright light source inside the room had now been turned of & instead an ominous glow appeared. Slowly and gently he let go off her & stepped back. As he let go off her, she could feel a sudden chill of the room she was in. His arms around her had kept her body warm till now. But something didn't feel right, she felt as if she was in a roller coaster & she was coming down the dissent. She looked around & then it all came back to her. She was floating at the place where he had left her. A sudden jolt shook the whole room but everyone else seemed unaffected & calm. Through one of the tiny windows she could see the world whiz passed them.
