A Matter of Time - Chapter Two  by ShadowMan

Veronica spoke softly to the device and soon they were observing Dallas, Texas, in November of 1963. They zoomed in on the Presidential motorcade and began to track it. The detail was extraordinary; they could easily make out Kennedy's face. His wife Jackie was wearing a pink outfit with a matching hat Veronica exclaimed over.

Carlos smiled and began making notes into his recorder, outlining in detail what steps they were taking in the research. He knew following protocol was the major part of the grade; finding the actual solution would be a significant bit of extra credit.

"Alright," he said "now what do we know about Kennedy?"

"Ummm...," began Veronica, then she ticked off some of the things they had covered "He was not in office long enough to make much impact historically. He did narrowly avert a major war with the Soviets -- we got that much in the Nuclear era lecture."

The image on the plate was now showing the motorcade winding its way through downtown Dallas.

"Yeah, and he moved forward with the United States involvement in Southeast Asia, which culminated in the Vietnam War. For all that though, he was very popular -- even in foreign countries."

"Uh huh, the entertainment industry and news media loved him too. I wonder why anyone would want to kill him."

"I guess that's what we're supposed to find out," said Carlos. He flipped open his small reference computer and began the secondary research needed to analyze what happened.

"Oh my God!" cried Veronica, raising her hand to her mouth. On the temporal plate, the back of Kennedy's head had just blown apart. She turned away.

"Halt," said Carlos, stopping the image. Jackie Kennedy was frozen in the act of climbing onto the vehicle trunk in pursuit of her husband's skull.

Veronica composed herself quickly, and opened her own computer. She cleared her throat and looked at Carlos.

"Alright," he said. "The conspiracy theories indicate an assumption that the killing shot was fired from somewhere near a grassy knoll."

"Pan out," said Veronica to the plate. The image widened to include most of the area.

Running the scene forward slowly again, they were able to pinpoint Oswald's position fairly easily as his muzzle flash extended beyond the window of the book repository; and they knew where to look.

"Isolate," said Carlos, touching the plate on the muzzle flash. The area was now highlighted. "Search viewable area for similar phenomenon."

The image began to move again, but stopped almost immediately. The image highlighted a spot southeast of the book respository.

"Enhance and pan in," said Veronica, bending forward. The image zoomed in to the scene of the second muzzle flash. Laying prone on the grass near a parking lot was a man; he was wearing a green uniform and holding a rifle.

"What? Is that a military uniform?" asked Carlos.

"No, I don't think so. Look there is a second man in the same kind of uniform. Pan in and enhance."

The image tightened on the second man and they could now see the uniform clearly. The patch on the man's breast said 'Parking Attendant'.

"A parking attendant? Let's see the shooter again. Undo."

The image refocused on the prone shooter, and they coaxed the plate to it's maximum resolution. They could see the top left portion of the man's face and head. He had dark hair, slicked back, and an aquiline nose.

"I think it's enough," said Carlo "Data Transfer, Identify Subject. This may take a while but who knows, we might get lucky."

The temporal plate exported the image to his computer and based on the partial view of the man it extrapolated a complete model of the shooter. Then it began a search of over four hundred years of images, conducting a comparative analysis using the model as a strict baseline.

In less than five minutes, they had their man. The first image in the return matrix was of him kissing a strikingly beautiful blond woman.

Professor Keyes was standing beside them now and leaned in close, so the other students could not overhear.

"Very good, you two. I believe you are the first to get it. History is full of oddities but murder will out, as they say. Sometimes the act of a jealous lover is mistaken for a political assassination. Good work!"

"But Professor," said Carlos "who was this guy Joseph Dimaggio?"
