"Hear Me"

Hear Me Chapter Two  by Nona

Melanie walked towards me and I glided towards her.

'I hear you daddy' she said. 'Where'd you go?'

'I never left, baby' I said, wanting so bad to hug her and apologize for leaving her in a lonely and demanding position.

'Daddy, I don't blame you, you know'

My breath caught in my throat. 'You should'

'But I don't becasue you're my dad and...well I can't stay mad at you forever now could I?' she looked me up and down and shook her head. 'Great. I'm talking to a ghost'

'Hey, young lady' I wagged my finger at her. 'You're talking to your father'

'I know but...what the hell?' she raised her eyebrows, waiting for me to answer.

'Language' I warned her. 'Miracles happen sweetheart. Billy told me about Matt'

'Oh, did he now?' she looked at Billy, who seemed really interested in his fingers. 'He was a jerk, dad. After you died, I told him I was pregnant and he kind of...'

'Freaked out' I finished for her. 'Bastard. I'd go haunt him but I'm kind of stuck to watching over this house'

'You're watching over us?' she asked, outraged. 'Daddy, what if I have a guy over and...'

'Honey, you haven't had a guy over here ever since Billy was born'

'I said what if' she tried slapping my arm playfully but her hand went right through me. My heart skipped a beat as she suddenly burst into tears.

'Mr?' Billy asked. I looked down at myself and noticed that my light was going out. Soon, Billy would be the only one to hear me and see me again.

'Billy! Hold your mother! Tell her I love her, tell her you love her and in time everything will be all right!' I shouted.

Billy moved over to his mother and did as he was told. 'Mommy. Hear me. Hear me. I love you and your own daddy loves you. Everything will be all right. You'll see'

Melanie looked at her son and took his small hands in hers. She looked up expecting to see me but of course, my light had gone out and if she could hear me, she'd only hear my quick intakes of breath and my tears crashing down my face. She'd hear my heart breaking and my brain screaming to be noticed.

Death was death. It was cold and set an inability over you. It was almost like a handicapp and all you wanted was to be heard and seen and acknowledged like everyone else but Death did not allow it. I floated back to my own mind and let go. I drifted down to sleep and woke up only to do the same thing that I had been doing for years now.
