“Shut the **** up!”
I swirled around, knocking into a lot of people in the process, to find out who Gavin was yelling at. I had just seen him walking the other way. Someone must have made a rude remark to him or bummed him not so accidentally. He’ll start a fight because of it. Gavin is prone to overreactions: I personally think it’s his “tragic flaw.” For some reason, the idiots here haven’t caught on to that. I don’t know how many times they’ll have to be punched in the face before they’ll learn not to mess with him.
I tried to see over everyone’s heads; but, seeing as I’m only 5’4”, my attempt failed miserably. I started to push my way through people. I made it just in time to see Gavin punch Bryce square in the jaw. Blood started running out of his mouth instantly.
“Gavin!” I screamed as I ran in between him and Bryce before he could have a chance to hit him again. I knew Bryce had it coming and deserved that punch all too well, but Gavin’s going to get in big trouble for this. It’s only the second day of school!
“Break it up! Move along.”
Oh ****, Mr. Smith is coming. If I don’t get Gavin out of here, he’s ****. I grabbed a hold of Bryce’s shirt and pulled his face up to mine; he had fallen to the ground after Gavin punched him.
“Tell him who hit you and you’ll get the **** beat out of you everyday for the next two years! Got it?” I saw the fear register in his eyes. He knew I wasn’t kidding. He nodded his head, agreeing to keep his mouth shut. I turned to Gavin. “Get out of here, now! And don’t even think about taking the blame for this.”
He reluctantly nodded his head. He knew what I had planned. I watched him push his way through the crowd of people around us. I turned back to Bryce, his collar still in my hand. “Go along with everything I say. You know the consequences if you don’t.” He looked at me with fear still in his eyes.
“Get to class. You’re all going to be late. Don’t make me give out detentions on the second day of the year. What’s the hold up here?” Mr. Smith broke through the crowd to see our little scene. Just in time, my acting skills kicked in.
“Don’t you ever think of touching me again! This is not yours to touch,” I gestured to my chest, “Do you understand?”
‘Y-y-yes. I’m sorry. I’ll never do it again.” he whimpered slowly, a small amount of blood still running down from his mouth.
“You two, my office, now, “ Mr. Smith said, stepping towards us.
I let go of Bryce’s collar and stormed towards the office dramatically. Bryce stumbled back a little as he stood to follow. He moped slowly to the assistant principle’s office. He knew he was going to get in trouble for this and Mr. Smith wouldn’t suspect Gavin’s role at all. This may be the karma Gavin was talking about yesterday at lunch. I just hope I don’t go down too.
Seconds after Bryce and I walked into Mr. Smith’s office, seated by the secretary, Mr. Smith walked in, an angry look on his face.
“Which one of you would like to explain what happened today?” he asked as he took a seat behind his desk.
Neither Bryce nor I said anything. We both looked at him with a blank stare.
“Helen, please tell me what happened.” I sighed, looking down at the ground. I knew exactly what I was doing.
“Well, I was walking to class, and Bryce was walking the other way,” I was still looking at the floor, working on my fake tears, “And when I least expected, he-he-he grabbed my chest,” I looked up at Mr. Smith, my eyes glossy, tears trying to escape. “My first reaction was to punch him.” I looked down at the ground again.
“Bryce, is this true?”
“”Yes, sir,” he was looking at the floor, a guilty look on his face. He was better at this than I thought he would be.
“Well then, I’m going to let you off easy since it looks like you both regret what happened. Bryce, you will serve two hour detentions and Helen you just get a warning. Your actions were mostly in self defense and I cannot punish you for that. Next time though, try not to use violence. Now if you’d excuse me, I have another issue to take care of. Mrs. Allen will write you passes.” With that, he opened the door for us and we got our passes from Mrs. Allen.
As soon as we were out of earshot, I turned to Bryce.
“Nice acting. I’m surprised you actually went along with it,” I said.
“Don’t you remember threatening me? I know you were being serious just like way back in elementary school when you broke B.J.’s nose ‘cause he stole your stuff,” he explained, chuckling at the memory.
“I can’t believe you remember that. That happened in like third grade.”
“How could I forget. That was hilarious. It’s a shame you had to turn into a freak. You were a pretty cool kid back then.”
“Bryce, I’m still the same person I was way back in third grade. I just dress different now. My personality is the same. It’s a shame you cant get around the stereotypes to see that. You’re the one that’s changed.”
“Maybe you’re right. I don’t really know. I guess this is the way things were meant to be.” I gave him a questioning look.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, you and I hating each other. We used to be so close, but I guess I **** that up. I never should have hurt you. I still regret it.” he looked down at his feet, sorrow etched into his face.
I was taken aback a little bit. I wasn’t expecting him to bring that up at all he never talked about that. It had happened so long ago, I thought he had forgotten about it all together. Actually, I’m surprised his friends hadn’t convinced him that it never happened.
Bryce was once just like me. He was into metal and going to concerts and all that. Then his jock friends convinced him that my friends and I were evil freaks. At the time, Bryce and I had been dating for a year. We may have been young, but our relationship was strong and we were extremely close. He broke it off, offering me no explanation, but I already knew why. I wasn’t good enough for his new life. I was just a freak. I was a wreck, but my friends pulled me through it. Bryce didn’t even seem to be phased by what he did. They completely brainwashed him.
“I know you think I was brainwashed. I really was. I never should have listened to them.” He stopped, his face still to the ground. He slowly turned, bringing his gaze to mine. “y-you were the best thing that ever happened to me. None of the other girls I’ve dated have even come close to comparing to you. I know we were really young, but we had something special. I wish I would have seen it then.”
I had no idea how to react to that. I was completely speechless. What could possibly bring this out of him? Could he really regret it that much? I don’t know if I can trust him. He hurt me so bad. I need out of this situation and fast.
“Uh… t-t-this is my class, I stammered, walking to the door, my face down. That was so awkward.
I walked up to my second period teacher’s desk and handed him my pass. He handed me the worksheet everyone was supposedly working on. I turned and headed to my seat. Andy and I made eye contact as I took my seat beside her. Immediately, her expression became worried. I laid my head down on the desk, my face facing her.
“What’s wrong?” she whispered, bring her desk over to mine.
“Bryce,” I whispered back. Confusion washed over her face.
“What do you mean?” I started to explain as fast as I could, recapping the whole story.
“Oh my God!” Andy said a bit too loudly.
“Andrea, you should be focusing on your work,” the teacher scolded. Andy just rolled her eyes.
“What are you going to do?” she asked.
“Nothing. I cant think of anything I could do. I don’t know if I can trust him.”
“Understandable. Just be careful.”
“Oh, don’t worry, I will be.”
“Good. You don’t deserve to be hurt like that again.”
“Thanks, love”
“Anytime, mi amiga.”
At lunch, I found that Andy had taken care of filling everyone in on what had happened. Honestly, I was glad she had; now I didn’t have to tell the story over and over again myself. I hate being the center of attention. I have a terrible self-conscience problem.
“This is all my fault,” Gavin said, banging his head off the table.
“How the hell is this your fault, Gav?” I asked, taking his face into my hand so he’d stop hitting it off the table. There’s no way in hell I’m going to let him blame himself for this.
“If I would have taken the blame or just ignored him, he wouldn’t have gotten the chance to talk to you and bring that **** up.”
“Oh, come on! You know as well as I do that I would not have let you take the blame for that. And Bryce would have eventually found time to bring all this stupid crap up anyway. He always finds a way.” Gavin couldn’t argue anymore; he knew I was right.
“Lynz, can I talk to you?”
I turned to see Bryce, leaning on my chair nervously. I really didn’t want to talk to him. From the look on his face, I could tell everyone was shooting daggers at him. I almost feel bad for him, but not quite.
“Excuse me,” came Curtis’s voice from behind Bryce. “I’d suggest you leave the girl alone. She obviously doesn’t want to talk to you.” Curtis walked over to the chair beside mine and pulled it closer to me, sitting down. He wrapped his arm around me and glared at Bryce.
Giving up way too easily, Bryce turned around and sulked away angrily. Uh oh, that’s no good. He must have something planned: he never gives up that easily.
“Curtis!” I exclaimed. “You are so my hero!” I wrapped my arms around his shoulders and kissed his cheek.
“You better watch out, man. Bryce has definitely got something planned to bring you down,” Devin warned.
“Oh well, I can handle it,” Curtis replied confidently. He still had his arm around my shoulder and leaned his head onto mine. “I wont let him near you unless you want him to be.”
“Awww, you’re cute!” Amy half yelled, referring to me and Curtis. I could feel myself blush and judging by the weight lifted off my head, Curtis was too. Wow, Aims, way to make things awkward. I glared at her, just making her giggle.
“You suck!” I mouthed. She shrugged in reply.
Lunch passed without any other awkward moments and soon I found myself sitting in seventh period Chemistry, sitting next to Curtis, waiting for the bell to ring. We were supposed to be getting our assigned seats for the year and I wanted to know who I was going to get stuck with for an hour everyday. Bryce was in this class along with a lot of people I hate. Come to think of it, Curtis is the only person I can remotely stand in this class. Too bad with my luck I’ll end up sitting next to Bryce.
“Okay class, as you all know, today will be receiving your assigned seats. Keep in mind that these seats are for the year and the person you sit with will be your lab partner as well. If there are any terrible problems, please let me know and I will consider moving you. I’m not pure evil,” Mrs. Anna explained. Thank God she’ll at least consider changing our seats if I get stuck with Bryce.
She began rattling off names, and I zoned out until I heard my name.
“Helen and Curtis, over here please.” I gave out a large sigh of relief as I heard Curtis’s name along with mine. We both picked our stuff up and headed to our table in the back of the room.
“Curt, you must have amazingly good luck or something. There is no way in hell, I’m this lucky,” I laughed as I sat down beside him.
“I guess so,” he laughed as well.
Just as we settled into a comfortable conversation, Mrs. Anna came over to our table.
“Well, it seems like we have too many kids in this class to have only two to a table. Bryce is going to be sharing with you two,” she informed us. I looked at her with shock and fear written all over my face. Curtis groaned beside me. “I’m sorry to hear your displeasure, but he insisted on sitting here.”
“Ugh,” is all I could say. Damn you, Bryce.
As Bryce pulled up his stole up beside mine, I moved closer to Curtis. Just like at lunch, he put his arm around me protectively. I could feel Bryce staring at us.
“Maybe if I wouldn’t have said anything, this wouldn’t have happened,” I whispered into Curtis’s ear, resting my head on his shoulder.
“Probably not, God is just playing a mean game today,” Curtis replied, giving me a comforting hug.
“Lynz, we really need to talk,” Bryce said.
“Oh really now?” I asked with venom laced in my voice.
“Yes, really. I really want you to forgive me for everything I did to you today and everything I did to you before. I really am sorry. Can’t you just give me another chance? I can prove to you that I’m still the person you knew in middle school; I was just led astray,” he begged.
I just looked at him for a moment. “Bryce, I really don’t know. Just leave me alone for awhile. Can you do that, please?” He looked hurt, but I know he deserves that. He’s done far worse to me.
“Yeah…I can do that. Just mill it over. And don’t pick that freak over me,” he gestured to Curtis.
“Oh, don’t even think you’re getting a chance now. You just made my decision for me. You haven’t changed at all, Bryce. I’m not going to let you hurt me again. And Curtis is not a freak, you dick!” I was furious now. This is such ****. Curtis’s grip tightened on me even more. He was angry too.
“I’m pretty damn sure you’re the freak here, ****,” he muttered lightly, I laughed.
“I should have known I was just wasting my time with you,” Bryce said, looking away from me and Curtis, anger showing clearly on his face.
“Shut the **** up!”
I swirled around, knocking into a lot of people in the process, to find out who Gavin was yelling at. I had just seen him walking the other way.
