Stoneheart Chapter 5
by Marykm
That night nobody rested with ease. Jade liked her new room, but she didn’t take much notice to it. One wouldn’t after being subjected to such shock and anger. Jade wasn’t going to comply with this awful creature’s wishes. What did he want anyway? What were his plans? She couldn’t understand this. She was ordinary. She had nothing special to offer a criminal mastermind. Did he possibly choose her because of this ordinariness? Kate was gone now. Her best friend may never see her again. How could this have happened? Jade asked the same question worded differently over and over. She was helpless. Jade almost couldn’t believe that Leo had acted so kindly before. And she fell right in his trap. She sat on her bed and buried her head in her hands. She hardly moved until Leo came in. He had of course installed security cameras all around the house. He had invented all of his equipment himself. Jade looked up. A look of disgust crossed her face. “What do you want now?” she asked bitterly. “Oh, don’t be so dramatic. I am here to give you a tour of your new home. I will show you all that you will be learning,” said Leo. He left out the magic part. Leo knew that he must keep Jade confused and upset. Otherwise she may find a way to escape. Jade gave her bitterness a rest. This boy obviously enjoyed verbal quarrels. She stood up. “As you wish, Leo. Clearly you will not tolerate any impertinence from me. Will you please answer one question?” Jade asked. Leo was pleasantly surprised that Jade was beginning to cooperate. He knew that she probably just wanted to get information, but he still appreciated it. He glanced in her eyes, knowing what she would ask. “I suppose so…” he said slowly. Jade stared at him for a while. What would he say? What was he thinking right now? “Why? Why did you capture me, Leo? Why choose me over others?” Jade asked sadly. Leo looked thoughtful. “As you may know, I cannot reveal the full details of my plan to you. I can tell you that being an orphan helped. You probably think you are ordinary. I can tell you that this isn’t true. I have more than just normal criminal plans, Jade. You will see, in time,” Leo answered. He never showed emotion, never even cared for this creature. But he wasn’t heartless, as he had said before, and would treat her with human dignity and respect. Jez was guarding Selena, the other creature in captivity. Jade may have been a handful, thought Leo, but Selena was a huge pain. Leo led Jade through the various rooms. They walked around upstairs. Jade was upset and didn’t speak much. They walked past one door, though. Jade asked what room it was. Leo hesitated. “That is my parent’s room,” he said. It was indeed. He didn’t go inside because he was holding Selena in a room just beyond it. His parents were out of town. They were usually on business trips. Jade simply nodded. She figured he didn’t want her to see his parents. They probably didn’t know about this, she thought. And indeed they didn’t. Jade spoke. “I’m really scared right now. I think you should know that,” she said. Leo stopped. “And why should I know this, Jade?” he asked. Jade replied, “I don’t know. I just thought I’d tell you. Leo said, “Hmm. That’s interesting. Do you ride horses? Play a sport?” Jade looked amused. “No, I don’t ride horses. I play tennis and soccer. Why do you care?” she asked. “After all, you don’t need to act nice anymore. I’m pretty much helpless.” Leo smiled. “Ha. I wondered; that’s all. I’m not totally cruel, Jade. To assume such is callous in itself, don’t you think?” he asked. Jade stopped. He simply wanted more information. She would not fall for that trick again. “Stop it,” she said. “Stop what, Jade? You must be more specific if…” Leo began. “You know what I mean! Stop acting like my friend. I know what you are trying to do. You are impossible. Honestly,” Jade said angrily. She sped up, walking just ahead of Leo. Selena kicked the wall. She hoped that Leo couldn’t find a Lancrion. What would he do with the poor creature if they were in his hands? Jez watched her carefully. What an enormous person. He could lift a car if he wanted to. “Jez! I’m really bored. You don’t know what you’re going up against. I’m hungry. Can I do something now?” Selena exploded with questions to annoy Jez. “You are such an odd creature. Leo knows what he is up against. It’s too bad that you’re hungry. No, just sit there and kick the wall. Stop talking,” Jez replied. “I’d rather not. This plan will never work. You will never find a Lancrion,” Selena said. Jez grinned. “We already did. Her name is Jade. I’m going to tape your mouth shut if you don’t stop talking,” Jez said smugly. Selena stared at him in disbelief. “You did? What? No!” she exclaimed, kicking the wall over and over and crying out, “Gaaaa! There are only about 500 left in the world! How did Leo find one? You will start a war, human! Do you even care?”
