stoneheart chapter 4  by Marykm
Jade woke up again in the airplane. She was sprawled across the couch over Jez and Leo. It wasn’t big enough for them to sit away from her when she lay down and they didn’t want to risk waking her up by moving her, so they stayed there.                                                                               Now Jade was really upset. She said, “Can I have candy now?                                                        “Augh! Will you ever learn, dear girl, to close your mouth? The answer is no, as I’m sure you have guessed. Why can you not just be silent?” Leo exclaimed.                                                           Jade retorted, “I will not be silent, dear boy, because I want to annoy you. I don’t like you very much. Are we there yet?”                                                                                                                Leo said, “We wouldn’t be in the air if we were there. You are going to regret having done this to me. You don’t seem to grasp that I am in control. Your fate currently lies in my hands.” While Leo spoke, Jade mimicked him. He muttered, “You don’t know what you’re messing with, Lancrion.”            When they landed, Jez held Jade’s hands behind her back as they walked. The home was next door to the airstrip they had landed on. Jade thought she should be crying right then, but it seemed as if she was in too much of a shock. The three went straight to the dining room. The table was long and had many chairs. Leo placed Jade at the very end. Jez and Leo sat in the seats on each opposite side of her.                                                                                                                  The waiters brought out shrimp. It was a simple food for Leo, as he was accustomed to many higher quality foods. But Jade didn’t like fish. She turned pale. She couldn’t eat it. Leo glared at her. “You complained the entire trip about wanting to eat. Why are you not eating now, Jade? You are quite a handful, aren’t you…?” Leo said.                                                                                 “I don’t eat fish!” Jade blurted. Leo scowled. He couldn’t live with this. This girl had to learn who the boss was.                                                                                                                    “Tonight you do,” Leo stated. He left the room, and then returned a few minutes later with shackles. “And you are not leaving this chair until the plate is clean.” He put one ring around her arm and the other around the chair. Jade looked like she was going to burst into tears at any moment. This was just too much.                                                                                                “You aren’t my mom. You don’t have to treat me like this,” Jade said. She stood up, dragging the heavy chair behind her. “I’m not eating that. I don’t care what you do, I just won’t eat it.” Leo flashed an evil grin. He was always up for a challenge.                                                                    “Okay, then. You will drag around that chair forever. You win. Let us all bow down to your almightiness,” he said. Jade broke down crying. Leo was pretty cruel, but he wasn’t completely heartless. He tapped his foot and said, “If I let you off easy this time, you will think you can do whatever you want. And you can’t. Just eat the fish, Jade. It will make your life a lot easier.”                                                                                                                                                       Jade took a bite. It was just as disgusting as she remembered. But she ate it all, sobbing all the way. She looked up with determined eyes and said, “You present me with a challenge. I know not the details of your plan, Leo, but I know that I will win one day. And you will never forget it. This mistake will haunt you forever, Leo. Forever.”
