The story so far:

"Running" -> "Breathing"

Robert  by Les_Lo9

As Callie got to the highway she scanned the distance in both road directions praying silently to see headlights.  She squinted her eyes in hopes of sharpening any image that could be beneficial to her.  "Nothing," she thought.  The land was bare just as she had remembered it to be, absolutely nothing.

She started walking north on the shoulder of the highway.  After what had felt like hours, but had in reality only been minutes she saw the soft glow of headlights in the distance.  As the vehicle grew nearer Callie started waving her hands to flag down the driver.  A man in a 91' model ford truck pulled to the side of the highway.

Callie crossed the highway and ran to his truck.  She noticed the rust which was slowly eating the gray painted metal of the truck.  The man in the truck was in his mid-thirties.  Callie was quit to notice his good looks.  He had light brown hair and brown eyes.  His features were soft and he had the look of an all-american boy.  He introduced himself as Robert.  Callie explained the accident to Robert.  He offered to drive her  north to the small town about 15 miles up the road.  Callie knew which town he spoke of.  Even though she wished he would take her in his truck and continue driving south, Callie got in the truck.  She put the duffle bag on the floor between her legs. As Callie fastened her seatbelt the truck did a U-turn on the highway and headed north, to the town she had hope to never return to again.
