In the year of 1477, the prince of Ireland was without a wife. Prince Aiden could not find his ideal wife from any of the world's royal families. So he decided to search the country of Ireland to find a wife, even if meant marrying a commoner. His eyes beheld the beautiful shepherdess, Brianna. But would a hot tempered commoner accept a man who has never done a day of work in his life?
I awoke in my bed of straw and saw the sun peeking over the rolling hills of green. As I watched the sun rise in the blue sky I had no idea what an extraordinary day this would be. I gathered my things and went out to the fields to watch over my father's flock of sheep. I sat down under the big tree I used to climb when I was just a lass. I reached for my harp and began to pluck its strings. My fingers made calming music to the sheep. My voice joined the melodious song and the sheep were at peace.
A sudden cry from my sheep interrupted my song. As I stood up I heard a horse running towards the flock. I was running with my wooden staff to see who was coming.
A beautiful horse was in sight. A man was riding the horse. When he got closer, I realized who he was. It was Prince Aiden, the king's heir to the throne of Ireland. I pondered why he would come to this side of the land.
My heart was pounding, staff still in both hands. He told me he would not harm me. He jumped off his horse and got a closer to me. He told me he was looking for a wife and that he wanted me. I told him I was but a peasent and that I do not belong in the palace. He still wanted me, he insisted. But I did not want to go off and marry a spoiled prince who had never worked a day in his life. My life was sitting under my favorite tree and watching my father's sheep, not at the palace. When I told him this he only laughed. This man did not fear my temper and my strength.
He jumped back on his horse. He reached his hand out and told me to come with him. I swung my staff at his horse, but, alas, he took his sword and sliced my weapon in half.
Having no other self defense, I ran away. I ran over a hill and he went after me. My legs began to tire. His horse got closer and closer. I ran with all my strength. When my hut was in sight, the prince lifted me off the ground and onto his horse.
I cried out for my father. But when he came out of the hut with my mother, it was too late. The guards blocked their way and there was no chance of claiming me back now. The prince informed them that we were to be married.
Then we headed towards the palace, my new home. They would call me the princess of Ireland, but in my heart I was the princess of the fields.
