Fur-Babies (15): Matronly Aunts  by JD_Renaissance
JuJu and Boston have two matronly aunts, Shiloah and Polly. They are both standard poodles, both 11 years old, and both only so tolerant of little doxies pups. Polly is the youngest and never really grew out of her puppyhood. She’s happy-go-lucky and quick to play with her little nieces when she feels strong enough to do so. But she is rarely strong. And she hates how they insist on cleaning her teeth, ears, and eyes. And she doesn’t appreciate it when they take her place on the top of the couch by the window. Usually, she’ll knock them off, or squeeze in next to them. But she does loves to romp and run with my fur-babies and will do so as often as possible. Shiloah, on the other hand, has reached her crotchety old age and doesn’t want to be bothered with two puppies. Especially low-riders that are difficult for her to see. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a very lovable dog. But when it comes to the pups, she’s anything but motherly. Especially with Boston. It took Shiloah a long time to warm up to JuJu. Mostly this is due to the fact Shiloah used to be my dog but when I moved away from home she stayed with her sister and my parents. When JuJu came into the picture, jealousy reigned supreme. After a while, though, they became tolerant buddies. When BoBo came nearly a year afterwards, Shiloah wanted nothing (and I mean nothing) to do with her. Boston is hyper. Shiloah isn’t. Boston likes to bounce around. Shiloah wants peace and quiet. Boston likes to lick teeth. Shiloah  has no interest in going to the dentist any time soon. Boston loves to snuggle. Shiloah loves to be left alone. Yet, despite all the growling and all the snarling and the occasional snapping bark, my youngest doesn’t ever give up on trying for her aunt’s love and approval, often flopping onto her back the instant she gets near Shiloah’s face. And it seems to be working a little. Though she most often growls at Boston, Shiloah will play with her on the rare occasion when she feels like being a young pup again. And when this happens, Boston couldn’t be happier.
