Renaissance: Blackout  by JD_Renaissance

For thousands of years the Mongerers would visit worlds, study them, and then leave, a small gift left behind in their wake. For thousands of years, worlds fell to their empire. Until the Harbingers. The Harbingers began as the first peoples to triumph over the wills of their now mortal enemies. Though they could not save their own world, only their people, they have made it their purpose to protect other peoples from the devastation left behind by the Mongerers.

In their cold calculations, the Mongerers had not counted on the Harbingers when it came to Earth. Of all the species they had conquered, humans were by far the most primitive. Mongerers did not believe the species would be worthy of Harbinger salvation. But they did not realize that to the Harbingers, anyone was worthy of being saved.

When word reached the Mongerers of the Harbinger’s intervention for Earth, they returned to the blue planet’s skies, their plan foiled, but only by so much. They turned off their device, now no longer necessary. The passive failed and so aggressiveness followed.

Twenty cities scattered across the planet remained on that last evacuation day. Twenty transports waited for the last of humanity to board. Only nine rose from the ground; only three reached the stars. Such was the Mongerers’ wrath.
