Fur-Babies (17): Getting Around the Rules
by JD_Renaissance
Never underestimated a dog. Especially a dachshund. It is rather easy, their size often making them seem more comical than smart or brave. But in reality, they are very smart and very brave and yes, very comical also. Of all these, I think they are greatly underestimated in intelligence. My girls, for example, love to find ways to get around the rules. The greatest instance of this involves the kitchen. We have a command for our girls that prevents them from begging called: Get outta the kitchen. When we tell this to our girls, they walk as far as the border of linoleum and carpet, turn, lay on that border, and wait. JuJu will usually lay just her head over the border. Or, here at my parent’s house, she’ll sit on the carpet behind the couch that divides the kitchen and the family room. This way she’s still close to the table but also obeying the rules. Boston, well, she’s just as sneaky, though in a completely different way. When we tell Bobo to get outta the kitchen, she will leave. But a few minutes later, when no one is looking or paying attention, she’ll walk right back in. Now, usually we can hear the dogs on the linoleum because their nails click. Not Boston. Somehow, she found a way to walk stealth, making it across the kitchen without making a sound. I don’t know how she does it, but before we know it she’s laying down behind our chairs and waiting for sweet morsels to fall from our plates unheeded by all but her.
