Remember by FaeryQueen
She let her fingers trail over the cherry oak cover, finding and tracing the flowery pattern. Her eyes, once a dazzling amethyst color, were clouded with grief and despair as her mouth moved, silently begging for the world to right itself. For the nightmare to end. Her hand flattened out in the center, close to the top and she wanted to cry out, 'Listen! It's there, his heart, it's still beating. You're wrong. he isn't dead, only sleeping!!' But it was wood, and wood had no heartbeat, just as the body that lay encased in it had none.
Pulling her coat tight around her shivering frame, she stepped back from the coffin and watched as their friends and family came up one by one to pay their respects, say their goodbyes. A hand touched her arm and she looked up into the dark eyes that shone with the tears of loss.
"Come, love, let me get you into the car. You're too cold and you're weak still."
Her eyes flitted back to the tiny coffin, sorrow filling her. "He was just a baby," she whispered, the plea falling from soft, full lips as though they could beg the life back from Death.
"I know, love. Nothing in this life is fair, but you loved more than any other mother could have and he knew it. He loved you."
"My sweet little angel..."
He shushed her, tucking her against his side. "Tomorrow, Abby darling. Tomorrow we will talk. Today, let's just remember. For Andrew."
"I love you, Michael..."
"Come, let's go to before they..." 'Put our son in the ground.'
