The Night Begins
by Cheeseliker
It was a night when most college kids were out having a good time. Drinking, partying, getting in trouble with the cops, etc. The types of things their mothers disapproved of. The pressure of classes and homework could be suspended till Sunday. Now was the time to let loose, be free, drown your sorrows, and hang out with friends.
Matt was doing his laundry.
He sighed as he leaned against the wall in the basement of the dorm, in the laundry room, waiting for the washing machine to finish. The whir of the machine was the only sound in the room.
Three minutes to go.
His was the only washing machine going. There were clothes still in one, and clothes piled atop another, but none currently on. The dryers on the other side of the room were empty, doors open. Nobody did their laundry on Friday night.
He shook his head as he contemplated how he had come to be washing his clothes, on a night when all responsibilities should be out the window.
He wasn't a loser really. He knew some people on his floor, others he had classes with or had seen a few times on campus, but he hadn't really made friends with anyone. Before he'd had a chance to talk to anyone about tonight, they were already gone, to some house or frat, to drink or smoke or do whatever. His roommate had gone as well, without a word.
Matt had been a bit of a loner in high school. Perhaps thats just the way it was.
Two minutes.
And so everyone had gone out, leaving him alone in his room, bored out of his mind. He had tried watching tv, but there was nothing good. Surfing the web could only fill up so much time, and so, he had decided to do something he had been putting off. His laundry.
He leaned over and watched the clothes through the circular window in the washing machine door. They swirled around to the rhythmic whirring sound. It was nearly hypnotizing. He let out another sigh. Just how much more of a loser could he be?
He still had time. It had only been a couple weeks. There were some people on his floor that were nice. He just needed to be more outgoing, be more social. Perhaps he could find something to do tomorrow night. In fact, he was sure of it.
One minute.
He'd go out tomorrow night. Find some friends to drink or smoke with. Maybe even find a cool girl or too. Maybe even hook up with one. Things could happen. He could hope. This was college after all.
He put his hand on the lid of the door, ready to open it when it was done. Ready to transfer the clothes from the washer to a dryer. Man, he thought with a smirk. I am just letting loose tonight. Wild. Out of control.
The whir of the machine stopped suddenly, and just as abruptly, the lights went out.
