Kamille looked herself over in the mirror, and frowned. Nothing in her closet was suitable enough for her to wear to church. The sun dress she was wearing didn't do much for her in her eyes.
"Mommy you look pretty." Taylor said while pretend burping her doll.
Kamille smiled at her daughter, and faced the mirror again. The doorbell sounded, and Taylor took off running downstairs.
"Don't you open that door!" Kamille warned while running behind her.
Taylor picked up her pace, as she neared the door.
"It's Mr. Tony!" She yelled over and over.
Kamille popped Taylor's hand when she reached for the door knob.
"You never open this door for anyone unless I give you permission." Kamille admonished her frowning child.
After looking out the peephole Kamille opened the door with a smile. She was happy to see Tony, and couldn't help but notice how good he looked in a suit.
"You look beautiful." He said before leaning in and kissing Kamille's cheek.
Kamille smiled from the inside out. She had been so self concious about what she was wearing, but Tony confirmed that she looked nice.
"Thankyou." Kamille responded. "You look nice yourself."
"What about me!?!" Taylor asked spinning around causing her dress to fly up.
"You look very pretty." Tony said before picking her up.
After grabbing the bible she hadn't touched in years Kamille headed to church with Tony. She was so nervous on the drive over there, but she tried to play it cool.
She hadn't been to church in so long she wondered what it would feel like to be there again. She wondered what God would think of her being in his house.
"My family has been going here for years." Tony said breaking their silence. "Infact my father use to be the preacher for years."
"My father's name is Paul!" Taylor shouted out.
The sound of Paul's name coming from Taylor's mouth made Kamille cringe. His name reminded her of all she had been through. Paul represented all the men Kamille had slept with, and all the men that made her feel worthless.
"You okay?" Tony asked grabbing her hand.
"I'm fine." She mumbled before turning to face the window. "So what happened to your father?"
"He passed away last year of colon cancer." He answered. "He was an incredible man I wish you could have met him. The most genuine man you could ever know."
"Like father like son." Kamille said.
As Tony pulled the car into the church's parking lot Kamille's stomach was in knots. She took a few deep breaths, trying to calm herself down as Tony got out of the car and opened her door.
After retrieving Taylor from the back seat they walked towards the church with a few other people. She prayed to God Tony wasn't one of those people who sat in the front.
Kamile immediatly spotted Bernadette, Daniel, his wife, and Dereck sitting on one of the pews in the middle of the church. Seeing all of them made Kamille nervous, especially given what happened the last time they were around eachother. She wondered what they thought of her. Could they be as understanding as Tony?
Tony led the way toward where his family was sitting, and Taylor grabbed his hand to keep up with him.
"Hey ma." He said to Bernadette before hugging her.
"It's bout time yall got here we was saving yall seats." She said before letting her son go and hugging me.
"You knew I was coming?" Kamille asked.
"Yes chile!" She said before taking Taylor's hand from Tony. "I'm going to take her on over to Sunday school."
Kamille nodded her hand, and they were gone.
"What's up Kamille?" Daniel asked.
"Hey Daniel." Kamille said. "How are you?"
"I'm good." He said. "You know were expecting!"
"Oh congradulations!" Kamille said before shaking his hand, and his smiling wife's hand.
"Hello Dereck." Kamille said.
Dereck mumbled something before getting up, and walking away. Tony gave him an odd look, but then shrugged it off. They both sat down next to Daniel, and his wife waiting for the service to start.
Bernadette squeezed her way between Kamille and Daniel, and laughed.
"Where is Dereck?" Bernadette asked quickly looking around.
"He's somewhere acting like a baby." Daniel answered.
After grunting Bernadette faced forward, and rolled her eyes.
"I'm glad you came." Bernadette whispered in Kamille's ear.
The service was better than Kamille could have imagined. The message was about "Moving Forward", and Kamille knew that message was for her. God spoke to Kamille that day, and she listened to every word.
"Let me talk to you for a minute." Bernadette said after church was over.
Kamille followed Bernadette into the crowded lobby of the church. They stood in a small hallway that not many people were in.
"Kamille I know you got a mess going on in your life right now, but please listen to what the pastor said today." Bernadette said. "I don't care nothing about your past, I only care about who you are today. My son ain't never talked about a woman so much in his life!"
"Well Tony is a great man." Kamille said smiling.
"I'm not talking about Tony, I'm talking about Dereck." She said.
Kamille stood there quietly unsure of what to say. She didn't understand why Dereck even liked her, she was never really nice to him, and didn't pay him much attention.
"I love Tony." Kamille heard herself say.
She couldn't believe those words slipped out of her mouth. Could she really love Tony?
"I know." Bernadette said. "And he loves you. That's what scares me."
"Why does that scare you?" Kamille asked.
"Because two of my sons are in love with you." She said shaking her head from side to side. "I don't want my family divided over this Kamille."
"I wouldn't want that either." She said. "But I love Tony Ms. Bernadette, and I can't help that."
"I know." She said before sighing. "Follow your heart." She said before walking away.
As much as Kamille wanted to follow her heart, she didn't want to come between family. Family was very important, and she knew that better than anyone else.
