Understanding Gizelle  by CeeCee

Aneesa woke up that next morning feeling a bit groggy. She stretched, and was startled when her arms hit what felt like another body. She snatched the covers back on her twin size bed to discover Gizelle sleeping peacefully beside her.

Aneesa looked around the room in confusion trying to figure out how Gizelle got in her bed. She slid out of bed, and tip toed to the bathroom. She sat on the toilet, and nervously ran her fingers through her hair trying to remember the events that happened last night.

She remembered going to all girls club, and how all the women were comfortable dancing with eachother. She even remembered Gizelle dancing with her. Aneesa remembered how Gizelle swaying her hips against her body made her feel. While it made her nervous, she also didn't want it to stop.

She went to the sink washed her face, and brushed her teeth. She looked at herself in the mirror thinking of how her mother was probably rolling over in her grave, because of the events that took place last night.

"Hurry up I gotta pee!" Gizelle yelled while banging outside the bathroom door.

"Okay sorry." Aneesa said opening the door.

She barely made eye contact with Gizelle as she rushed by her.

"Slow down Mississippi!" Gizelle laughed grabbing Aneesa's hand.

Their flesh touching made Aneesa jump, while butterflies flew around in her stomach.

"You okay?" Gizelle asked.

"I'm fine." Aneesa said letting go of her hand.

"Listen maybe after I take a shower we can go grab some breakfast." Gizelle suggested.

Aneesa was terrified to go out with Gizelle again. She didn't want to feel that weird sensation anymore. As much as she wanted to say no she couldn't. Although Gizelle terrified her, she couldn't help but to want to be around her, so she agreed.

Aneesa decided to call her sister after Gizelle went into the bathroom. She didn't call her yesterday, and wanted to let her know she was okay.

"Hello?" Asiya answered sounding sleepy.

"Did I wake you?" Aneesa asked happy to hear her sister's voice.

"Ofcourse you woke me!" Asiya laughed in between yawns. "So how's the city life?"

Aneesa didn't want to tell her sister the truth about city life, because she didn't know what Asiya would think.

"City life is pretty good." Aneesa said. "I'm just still trying to get settled in ya know."

"You like your roomate?" Her sister asked causing Aneesa's heart to beat faster.

The thought of Gizelle made Aneesa's heart race. She began to think about how Gizelle danced the night before. How Gizelle never lost eye contact with Aneesa as she swayed to the music.

"Hello!?!" Asiya said after the long pause.

"Oh um...she's great." Aneesa answered feeling embarrassed that she had gotten lost in her thoughts.

"Well that's good cause you don't wanna be living with somebody you don't like." Asiya said.

"That's true." Aneesa agreed.

"Daddy came here." Asiya said in a soft tone.

Aneesa's body tensed up, as she tried to process what her sister just announced.

"He...what?" Aneesa questioned.

Asiya sighed into the phone, and Aneesa could tell she was nervous.

"He...called me the day you left." Asiya said. "He ask me is she dead. I didn't know who was on the phone or what he was talking about. But then after I said yes mamma is dead, he told me it was daddy."

"Really?" Aneesa asked in disbelief.

Gizelle walked out of the bathroom only wearing a towel, and Aneesa couldn't help but to stare. Her arms and legs were toned, and she had the smoothest dark skin that Aneesa had ever seen.

They locked eyes for a moment, and Gizelle smiled. Aneesa quickly turned away.

"Did you hear what I said!?!" Asiya yelled into the phone.

"Oh sorry....I'm here!" Aneesa said trying to focus on their conversation.

She listened to Asiya talk about how their father came and left, and Asiya even went as far as to say she didn't think he was coming back. Aneesa wished she would have been there to see him. She wanted to know why he left in the first place.

***********************************************

Aneesa watched Gizelle cut up her pancakes carefully, before pouring syrup on them.

"My mother use to bring me and my sister here when we were little." Gizelle said looking up at Aneesa. "Eat up the foods great!"

"You have a sister?" Aneesa quizzed before biting down into a piece of sausage.

"Yeah were only a year and a half apart." Gizelle answered. "We are very close."

"So are me and my sister." Aneesa said. "She's back in Mississippi."

"What's her name?" Gizelle asked.

"Asiya." Aneesa answered.

"What's that...muslim?" Gizelle asked.

"Yeah...it means one who tends to the weak and heals them." Aneesa said.

"Does she live up to her name?" Gizelle asked before stuffing pancakes in her mouth.

"Sorta...it's hard to explain." Aneesa answered.

"What's your name mean?" Gizelle asked.

"It don't mean anything." Aneesa said. "Asiya got a special name because she's a special girl, I'm just regular."

"Your not regular Aneesa...atleast not to me." Gizelle said looking Aneesa in the eye.

Aneesa quickly looked away, not sure of how to interpet Gizelle's comment.

"Why do you always look away from me?" Gizelle asked.

Aneesa didn't know how to answer that question so she just shrugged her shoulders.

"Do I make you nervous?" She asked.

Aneesa thought about her question, and decided she should answer honestly.

"You make me feel something I've never felt before." Aneesa said looking into Gizelle's eyes.

"Have you ever been with a man before?" Gizelle asked.

Aneesa didn't understand how that question related to what they were talking about.

"What you mean been with?" Aneesa asked with raised eyebrows.

"Sex...you ever had sex with a man?" Gizelle clarified.

"Oh heavens no!" Aneesa answered. "My mamma told me to wait til I get married."

Gizelle let out hardy laugh, and Aneesa wondered what she found to be so funny.

"Your such a good girl." Gizelle teased.

"So you've been with a man?" Aneesa asked.

"God no!" Gizelle yelled looking as if she were going to vomit.

"I guess that makes you a good girl too!" Aneesa said.

"Not exactly." Gizelle said.

"What you mean?" Aneesa asked feeling confused.

Gizelle put her hand over Aneesa's, and looked at her for a moment. She opened her mouth as if she were about to say something, and suddenly closed it.

"Let's go." Gizelle said standing up and putting on her jacket.

That moment confused Aneesa, but she thought she better leave it alone.

"In due time you will understand me." Gizelle mumbled before leaving.
