well-done! with this title, there a million possible topics you could do with this, and i decided to read this, because around the holidays, I'm pretty much feeling the same. you talked about getting crabs, and it made me grateful that i never got such a thing in my promiscuous youth. I got a ten-day eviction notice which should be resolved, my bank account is in the negative, but I haven't resort to substance abuse! That would just cost more money that i don't have. but i like how you talked about being 16 and thinking the whole world is a place of oppurtunity, and then growing old and realizing that teachers lie about the American dream. i heard my uncle say, " the average college graduate would be lucky to get a job managing a MacDonald's' and it's true. Matter of fact, i knew a girl who got a degree in math and the only thing she could do with it is manage a Wendy's. So yes, the american dream is a nightmare. i encourage you to continue this piece. |

You hit it on the head. The holidays, time for self reflection, joy and well, pathos. :) Sorry to say I was a little tipsy and soured when I wrote it. As for my American Dream I'm not giving it up anytime soon, which is to be publishes someday. I'll either make it or die trying but I can imagine not everyone sets out to work retail or at a factory or what have you and while there is respect in that, hard work I mean, my goal and dreams are not dead yet, while for many they are. I'll take mine to my grave. |

Hey Baz...totally cool piece here. I know I a not one into drinking, drugs, and betting on games, but I can definitely dig the mindframe your character has. I think that is the entire essence of the TRUE 'American Dream.' It's just a damn dream. Well thought out and composed. Nice to see your work. |

Not a big drug guy here either, but in reality it happens. Mary Jane, makes me not right at all, you might as well sing Good night sweetheart so I quit doing that particular substance. Cocaine? Hell I can barely afford rent, not unlike the character here, but the difference is and what I meant to convey albeit I failed in many regards, was that dreams don't come easy and we shouldn't give up on them. While it seems quite depressing this story, well, I was in a funk when I wrote it. Call it therapy and coming to terms with about let's see, so far a manuscript I wrote has gotten 19 rejection letters from publishers. Thanks rico. |

Well, Baz, good luck on getting published. Maybe you could do a barter for an editor or someone to get a fresh perspective on your manuscript in exchange for whatever trade you are familiar with. Craigslist is good for that I hear. Do keep trying. Even the greats had a time getting started. |
