The story so far:
Jesus seemd to show a natural interest in religion. The Jews who lived in Nazareth tried to teach Jesus the principles contained in the Hebrew scriptures, but it wasn't long before Jesus began to disagree with them. One of the central ideas of Jewish tradition was contained in the phrase: "An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth". Jewish teachers explained it to Jesus, they said, "If someone pokes out your eye, then you have to get revenge against him by poking out his eye. If someone smacks you in the mouth with a club, and knocks out one of your teeth, then you have to get revenge against him by knocking out one of his teeth".
Jesus said,"No,that's wrong. The 'eye-for-an-eye' philosophy is a philosophy of vengance. If someone pokes your eye out, you must forgive him. If someone knocks your teeth out, you must forgive him. If you forgive the sins of others, your soul will be pure." The Jew that Jesus was talking to was stunned when he heard this. He said, "Look,if somebody pokes out my eye, and knocks out my tooth, I'm going to poke out his eye and knock out one of his teeth, too! It's not a sin to get revenge for a sin!"
Jesus said,"Yes it is. If someone slaps you on the cheek, turn the other cheek, and let him slap you on the other cheek." The Jews were stunned. One Jew said,"If someone slaps my cheek, I'll slap his cheek, and then we'll both be even!" Jesus said, "No,you'll both be sinners! If someone slaps your cheek, turn your head around and let him slap your other cheek, too. Do not resist. Do not fight, for it is a sin to fight. The phrase 'turn the other cheek' became a famous phrase. People talked about it all over Nazareth. Jesus said that trying to get revenge against people who had insulted you was a mistake, you had to leave it to God. God will set things straight, but you, as a human being can never set things straight by trying to get revenge against your fellow human beings. No man should punish another man! Only God should punish men! This was the new philosophy! This was unprecendented! Jesus was preaching that true morality only comes from forgiving the sins of others, it can never come from an act of revenge. Many Jews avoided Jesus because of this. The philosophy of Jesus was radically different from the philosophy of the Jews.
