#$^% Filters by njharman - Nov. 13, 2007

Several people have expressed concern about curse words that appear in stories published on StoryMash. We'd like more feedback from our users before we implement any filtering system. We're curious how many, if any of you, esp authors, consider filtering your stories worse than having curse words viewable by all.

Some options:
opt-out filtering - certain words would be filtered by default, logged in users could turn filtering off.
opt-in filtering - nothing would be filtered by default, logged in users could turn filtering on.

Please email us your thoughts feedback@storymash.com.

Personally, I feel that cursing in some stories is needed, I would suggest implimenting a rating system rather than a filter. IE: G,T,MA simply to allow readers to determine if they are offended by language or grafic scenes.

If language offends you, there are a number of sites tailored to the three or four-thousand religions currently practiced. Writing is a free-form exercise that derives zero benefit from forced censure.

I think when it comes to certain four letter words, there is some room for discretion. There at times within a story where some of these words are the best to develop a character and express a thought or mood; however, it is easy to understand that using them can be overdone. If a story is loaded with such words, it would not work. I'm not sure how you would handle this type of selective filtering.

I do not think that censorship is a necessity when it comes to writing, because writing is one of the freedoms that people et to express their own thoughts in, and it is also a good way to get a mood across among other things. Although stories don't need to be laced with four letter expletives every other word, I do feel that they can help convey moods due to the diction used, even if it involves cuss words.

Because of the nature of the internet, anyone underage can access the site. I'd be in favor of a certain level of censorship if only to protect younger people who find the site. I like the idea of having logged in users being able to turn off filtering.

Let the writers write and the readers choose. My eyes can close and my fingers can click. No one forces me to read anything I might find offensive including baad speling.

I personally would rather keep all the swears, and have a rating system, similar to Newgrounds.com. If a story has offensive content, there would be a rating that warns before before they read. People that don't mind will just go on to read the story...

But children aside, stumbling upon offensive content in a story is sort of like hearing someone on the street use a bad word. It's part of life. If you step inside someone's head or in their house, you're sort of accepting their rules and lifestyle to a degree.

I believe people should be able to write want they want. It may not by my choice -- but we should all have free choice. That's what makes everything unique.

personally i like the filter option on my profile, i think it is fine how it is. even if you set up an age type filtering system it can and will be bypassed.

um, I can't see the list of titles for the leading contest entries. I would really like to read the titles. The ad banner is right over them.

Is this some ignorance on my part? If so, please tell me what setting to change, and I will be duly embarassed.

It's something to do with internet explorer. I've been using Firefox and I don't have the same issue, but every time I try to view with Explorer I see the same as you...

oh, and more on topic, about the curse words...

it wouldn't be so bad if the censored words had the correct number of characters. You know, like seven stars for something like, "Why is this ******* ad banner in the way?" or four letters for "why the **** is that ad banner in the way?"

Honestly, I'm only teasing. I wouldn't normally curse at a fellow programmer over a bug, but I thought it made a nice point :)

i have read a few stories with **** instead of the word, i am not sure if that is the authors choice, or if your site is filtering it. however, as a public speaker and a writer, i feel that a piece or work, can lose its voice and emotion if the word is censored. true, curse words are vulgar and most of the time are not necessary, but it says something about the character and the emotion that is associated to the situation, when one has to step outside the normal polite and correct way of speaking to convey the message with the intensity intended.

example:

if i say; "get out now."

i can add emotion and voice to it buy adding:

"GET OUT NOW!"

but what if that does not accurately describe the the voice of the character saying the words. though as an author we must keep our cool and composure at all times, our characters, to make them believable, do not have that luxury.

what if the person saying the words, had just witnessed something horrible, and is not gifted with a large vocabulary and the character, like most everyday people, resorts to using curse words as emotional fillers.

"GET THE **** OUT, NOW!"

once i got in a fight with my father, and we were so enthralled and upset that at the very end, he could not bring himself to rational thought, and needed to have the last word, but could not think of anything to say, accept "yeah, well, **** ****!"

our work is to reflect life, often times even if it is fiction. we can not do so if we sensor the flaws that make us human, even if other people do not want to see it, it will have lost meaning with out it.
